Albert Ramos-Vinolas Hoping to Bounce Back from 2020 Woes

Ramos-Vinolas entered the tournament as the fourth seed. That ranking, however, is a deceptive representation of his shaky 2020 form.

Ever since professional tennis returned, he’s played in four tournaments, yet the furthest he can boast is a second-round finish in the recently concluded Roland Garros. In the three other tournaments he’s competed in, first-round eliminations have been common themes; a huge contrast to a two-time ATP winner, and a player who once ranked 17th in the world.

But he’ll be hoping that the bye he received in the first round helps him in navigating the rest of the tournament, especially since he’s on a surface that he statistically fares better on.

He has a 467-277 record on clay, his best performing surface, although his six wins to eight losses for the year seems to suggest otherwise.

With Fabio Fognini withdrawing from the tournament as well due to a recent Covid-19 diagnosis, his ranking is only bettered by two other players in the tournament.

Ramos Vinolas also boasts a vast amount of tournament experience across different levels that would make you think he’d be one of the favorites to clinch the tournament, but the bookies seem to think otherwise, especially in this second round fixture against a young Corentin Moutet.

Uncharacteristically, especially as a seed, he comes into the round as the underdog. Yet, somehow, that assessment from the bookies seems like a wise decision.

Corentin Moutet, a Future French Star

Moutet had a good start to the year, defeating Stan Wawrinka in the Qatar Open to progress to the finals in Doha and only losing in that final to an experienced Andrey Rublev.

He, however, showed grit, especially on a surface that he isn’t used to. The Frenchman followed that berth with a quarterfinal finish in Cordoba, but that’s where the 21-year-olds fairytale seemed to have stopped.

As with many players, he struggled to recover the early year form after the Covid hiatus took over.

Nevertheless, he hasn’t had as many tournaments to prove himself as he occasionally does. He’s played in three main draws since the restart, achieving first-round finishes in the French Open and the Italian Masters, and a third-round finish in the US open, showing signs that he is improving on a surface that he isn’t relatively used to.

Now, though, he’ll be playing on his most favored of surfaces: clay. He’s achieved a 132-63 career record on it and has also won a large majority of his challenger titles on the surface. It would be deceiving to look at his 2020 record on the surface, currently an equal five wins and five losses record, and try to use it to write him off.

Plus, he started the tournament strong with a straight-sets win against Frances Tiafoe, an opponent that was tipped to give him a hard time, and that close but sturdy display seems to have convinced the bookies that he’ll show the same tenacity in this upcoming second round fixture.

And, as much as the ball is in his court, he should still be wary of his favorites tag before he steps onto the court on Thursday.

Ramos-Vinolas v Moutet Prediction and Tip

Ramos-Vinolas will surely want to prove his worth against a rising star and will be keen to go toe to toe with him. Therefore, as much as I expect Moutet to emerge victorious in this one, all the stats point to a close and nervy encounter, one which will require the victor to prove himself in a third set.

Tip: Match to have three sets: 6/4 (bet365)
