Alejandro Davidovich Fokina v Dennis Novak Head to Head

This will be the second meeting between the two players.

Their previous and only ever meeting so far came recently in the U.S. Open. Alejandro Davidovich Fokina won that incredible five-set match in New York. Additionally, that sole head-to-head match was on a hard court.

Fokina Hoping to Continue His Stunning Displays

Fokina shocked Marin Cilic by coming back from a set down to win the tie. He was outplayed in the first set, but went toe to toe in the second set, and even rescued the 11th game from two break points, which would have probably tilted the momentum in Cilic’s favor if the Croatian had managed to capitalize on those break points. He then took the second set to a tiebreaker, which ended in his favor, and used the momentum from that set to dictate play in the third set.

This win follows his great first-round win that also saw him come into the tie as an 11/5 outsider against Emil Ruusuvuori, but as many recent tournaments have shown, odds are just a number. Fokina illustrated that perfectly with a straights sets win against an opponent who was tipped to give him some great amount of trouble.

His confidence seems to be high after a solid display in the Us Open. His efforts in that tournament saw him reach the fourth round in his US Open main draw debut. Though subpar results in Rome and Paris may have followed that fourth-round berth, those came on clay, and Fokina’s preference seems to be on hard courts: his 75-36 career record a great indicator of that.

Additionally, for someone who had never won on indoor courts in 4 matches prior to this tournament, he seems to be relishing that recent outburst of confidence that has seeped into this tournament as well and seen him win on indoor hard courts twice in a row now.

With the upcoming quarterfinal, he’s perfectly positioned to make it 3, especially since he’s facing an opponent whom he’s already beaten this year.

Dennis Novak Seeking Us Open Revenge

Novak’s road to the quarterfinals isn’t as stunning as Fokina’s. Although he bettered Fourth seeded Benoit Paire in straight sets, Paire had some recent illness issues and was anything but match fit for their second-round tie.

Novak, however, did cause an upset in the first round against Jordan Thompson. He defeated the Australian in straight sets and finally avoided first-round elimination for the first time since professional Tennis returned after the Covid-19 hiatus.

Speaking of first-round eliminations, one of those came against Fokina in the Us Open. They had a match to savor, one which Fokina won in five sets to Novak’s dismay. In his mind, that defeat will still be fresh, and he’ll surely be gunning for revenge in this upcoming tie.

But other than these two recent wins, it’s hard to see a way in which he carves out his revenge. His form surely pales in comparison to Fokina’s, and the 21-year-old Spaniard has some great momentum going into this one. That momentum, ultimately, seems like it may be too much for a rocky Novak.

Fokina v Novak Prediction and Tip

Fokina is perfectly poised to make it into the semifinals of this competition. The match may be a nervy affair, but if he manages to shake the nerves off and take control early, he should match or better that previous head-to-head result in the Us Open. Therefore, expect the Spaniard to prove his worth against Novak.

Tip: Fokina to win: 4/6 (bet365)
