Andrey Rublev v Denis Shapovalov Head to Head

This will be the fourth meeting between both players, with Shapovalov leading the head-to-head 2-1. Rublev won their first meeting in 2017 at the Next Gen ATP Finals in Milan, and the Canadian won the next two at Winston-Salem and Miami last year.

Rublev Seeking Another Title & London Birth

Andrey Rublev returned to the tour in the latter part of 2019 after a long injury lay-off and has had a very strong last year, as he has won three tournaments in 2020 already, on hard courts and on clay and is now in the top ten of the ATP rankings for the first time in his career.  Along with titles in Doha, Adelaide and  Hamburg,he also did well to make the last 16 at the Australian Open and the quarter-finals of both the US & French Opens. .

Rublev has shown versatility on different surfaces, succeeding on both hard courts and clay thus far. He has a strong indoor record in seasons past as well, where last year he won the Moscow Open indoors, and was a quarterfinalist at Marseille, Vienna and here in St. Petersburg.  Having broken into the top ten of the world rankings, the Russian has started the final indoor swing of the season with his sights on the Tour Finals in London, with the last two spots yet to be determined.

The week got off to a strong start with a thumping win against Canadian Vasik Pospisil, but he was then in for a tussle against young Frenchman Ugo Humbert.  Humbert won the first set 6-4 and Rublev fought back to win the next with an identical scoreline. The decider saw a tight battle before Rublev finally clinched it 7-5. His quarter-final encounter against Briton Cameron Norrie saw a more clinical Rublev performance with a comfortable straight sets win, setting up a semi-final against young Canadian, Shapovalov.

Shapovalov In Sublime Touch

Denis Shapovalov  broke onto the scene back in 2017 and has since had an up and down career, some of it due to his young age and relative inexperience.

2020 got off to a good start at the ATP Cup, but was followed by a disappointing opening round loss to Marton Fucsovics at the Australian Open. February saw another mix of inconsistent form, and the return to the tour after the Covid-19 related break saw a good start at the US Open, but was followed by disappointment early at the French from a strong position, after a good run the week before in Rome.

The Canadian arrived in St. Petersburg looking to brush off the early loss in Paris and have a strong end to the year on the indoor courts, as he just like Rublev remains one of the individuals with a shot at filling the last few spots for the ATP Tour Finals in London next month.

Shapovalov looked in prime form thus far at the tournament dropping only five games in each of his first two rounds. He was up against Victor Troicki in the opener, who was a lucky loser replacing Sam Querrey diagnosed with Covid-19.  The Canadian looked in sublime touch and won the match 6-2, 6-3 before a similar 6-1, 6-4 victory against Ilya Ivashka in the next match.

A more difficult opponent in the three-time major champion Stan Wawrinka awaited in the quarters, and although it was a well-fought match, the Canadian displayed more purpose and composure in closing out a straight sets win 6-4, 7-5.

Rublev v Shapovalov Prediction and Tip

A clash between two players in very similar places in their career; 22-year-olds with a lot of promise in the midst of a good run, just broken into the top ten and looking to end the season strong.

The players are evenly matched, and it is down to who does better on the day; expect Rublev’s all round grit to pull off a three-set win.

Tip: Rublev to win in three sets: 3/1 (bet365)
