Kyle Edmund v Yoshihito Nishioka Head to Head

The pair have met five times before, and Edmund leads their head to head series by four matches to one. However, most of those matches were when they were both on the junior circuit, and they have not played each other since the US Open in 2015, when Nishioka claimed his solitary win.

Edmund Looking to Improve after Poor Run

Edmund will be looking to improve on his recent run, which has seen him win just one competitive match since the return of the sport after lockdown.

And that trend continued last week with a first-round defeat to Lloyd Harris of South Africa in Cologne, in a match strewn with errors from both men.

Edmund set the pattern by dropping his serve in the first game of the match, and, although he broke back straight away, he failed to convert three break points in the South African’s next service game. And he was made to pay immediately for his generosity as he dropped his own serve in the next game.

He broke to level in the tenth game, but failed, yet again to hold his own serve and, this time, the South African took advantage to claim the set.

The second set was much tighter and went with serve, resulting in a tie-break. However, Edmund dropped his serve three times, whilst Harris held his at the other end, and the match was over in a little over two hours.

Nishioka’s First Match since French Open

Nishioka did not play in Cologne last week.

This match then marks his return to action after the French Open, where he pulled off a shock win in the first-round by knocking out the number 19 seed, Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada, in straight sets. However, he then was beaten by the world 157, Hugo Gaston of France.

Like Edmund, he has been struggling for form of late, and the other time he has been beyond the first-round of a tournament since lockdown was at the Rome Masters, where he reached the second-round only to be thrashed by Grigor Dimitrov, winning just a single game.

Earlier in the year, his best performance came at Delray Beach in February, where he reached the final, losing to Reilly Opelka in three sets.

Edmund v Nishioka Prediction and Tip

Edmund will start favorite for this match because of his higher ranking and superior head to head record, although neither man is currently in good form.

However, at some stage there has to be an upturn for one of these two men, so this is as good a time as any.

Tip: Edmund to win: 1/2 (bet365)
