Anett Kontaveit v Sara Sorribes Tormo Head to Head

This has been bit of a one-sided rivalry with all the three encounters between them having gone in favour of Kontaveit. Two of those came at the Australian Open, in 2019 and earlier this year in 2020, and the remaining encounter at the US Open last year. Sorribes Tormo finally managed to win a set in their last meeting at Melbourne Park earlier this year.

Kontaveit Edges Out Alexandrova

It’s matches like the one Kontaveit faced in the first round against Ekaterina Alexandrova which turn a talented individual into a clinical tennis star. Down a set, then two breaks in the final set and then two match-points in the third set tie-breaker, Kontaveit went on to take the match 4-6, 6-2, 7-6(6).

Interestingly, Kontaveit would have been expecting a tough encounter against a player who had won 33 of her previous 39 encounters under a roof, but she was still an overwhelming favourite going into the match. That didn’t seem to be the case though when Kontaveit fell behind 5-2 in the final set.

She clawed back to level pegging but even that didn’t stop her Russian opponent from rushing away to a 6-4 lead in the tie-breaker. The never-say-die characteristic in Kontaveit jumped to the fore on each of those occasions as she went on to win the next four points in a row to claim a spot in the second round.

Kontaveit later admitted her strategy was to remain in the match, forcing her opponent to earn the right to win. And that worked brilliantly as Alexandrova wilted away in quick time. She takes on a qualifier who sent out Magda Linette in her opener.

Sorribes Tormo Surprise for Linette

The Spaniard, ranked 73rd in the world, and having never seen the top-60 in the world, had made the main draw with wins over Ana Bogdan and Anna Blinkova in the qualifiers but not too many expected her to go too much further.

That she defeated the match favourite Magda Linette was a surprise in itself but to do that for the loss of just four games was a rather pleasant one. One that should fill her with so much more confidence coming into this one against Kontaveit.

The reason for that is simply her record on non-clay surfaces, which is under-par to say the least. Overall, across tiers and exhibition competitions, Sorribes Tormois 214-98 on clay while in a mix of indoor and outdoor hard court surfaces, she has won 84 matches and lost 82.

This year itself, Sorribes Tormo is coming off a title win on the clay courts of an ITF tournament – which was followed by a loss to Simona Halep at Roland-Garros – but a second round in an indoor hard court competition is only the second time in her career she has done it.

Can she now make it a career-best quarterfinal?

Kontaveit v Sorribes Tormo Prediction and Tip

Kontaveit is an overwhelming favourite here at 2/7 with her opponent starting out at 5/2. Sorribes Tormo has shown some confidence while Kontaveit’s scrappy game first up could be a cause for concern.

Tip: Games Handicap Sorribes Tormo +4.5: 8/11 (bet365)
