Pierre-Hugues Herbert v Jannik Sinner Head to Head

This will be the first match between the two players on the tour.

Herbert Seeking Stronger Run On Singles Tour

Doubles specialist and winner of all major titles as a doubles player, Pierre- Hugues Herbert has looked to focus more on his singles game beginning 2019. The Frenchman has met with success on the faster hard, indoor and grass courts. Having broken into the top 50 on the singles tour and reached a career high number 36 last year, he has fallen to world number 71, as he seeks a revival.

The Frenchman was a quarterfinalist at the Qatar Open in Doha to start the year, as well at Montpellier, but never hit any consistent form in the early part of the year going into the pandemic hiatus.

Upon his return to the tour, he skipped the hard courts and headed straight to the clay. He looked in a good position to upset Alexander Zverev at the French Open in the second round, but a mix of Herbert’s nerves and Zverev’s grit saw the German through in five sets.

The indoor season saw an early loss here in Cologne last week, but he has done well this week to come through the qualifiers and play an impressive opener against hard hitting American Tennys Sandgren in a crucial third set. In a match where the American served big and held service well, Herbert did well to hang in with a strong return game and break the Sandgren serve at crucial junctures.

Sinner Hoping to Continue Solid French Open

Italy’s teenage sensation Jannik Sinner has been on an impressive run since the European Open semi-finals in Antwerp almost a year back. Winner of the ATP Next Gen Finals at Milan, making the quarterfinals in Rotterdam this February and defeating Benoit Paire and Stefanos Tsitsipas at the Rome Masters were all impressive results.

His first appearance in the main draw at the French Open will qualify for the most important run in his career thus far, though. He outdid all expectations to defeat David Goffin in the opener, Alexander Zverev in the fourth round, and put up a spirited performance against the King of Clay, Rafa Nadal in the quarter-finals.

The successful Roland Garros run saw Sinner break into the top 50 of the world rankings and although a stomach bug stopped him from participating at St Petersburg last week, he is back on the tour and got off to a strong start here in Cologne.

Beginning his campaign against Aussie James Duckworth, the Italian put up a clinical displaying dropping only three games in 61 minutes for a 6-1, 6-2 win, breaking his opponent’s serve five times and looking in strong touch with scintillating groundstrokes.

Herbert v Sinner Prediction and Tip

This could be an exciting match between two players, where one has strong groundstrokes and the other naturally strong at the net, given his doubles play. However, Sinner has looked in excellent form in recent times as well as in the opener here and should win this match without much ado.

Tip: Sinner to win in straight sets: 4/6 (bet365)
