Karen Khachanov v Zizou Bergs Head to Head

There have been no previous matches between Khachanov and Bergs.

Khachanov Coming off St. Petersburg Quarterfinal

Featuring in the ATP 500 event at St. Petersburg, Khachanov faced a couple of tough situations in his first two rounds before making it to the last-eight. There he faced a resurgent Milos Raonic who hadn’t been broken before that in the tournament, and he went down 6-1, 7-6.

As far as Khachanov’s performances indoors are concerned, his only Masters title win had come indoors at the Paris Masters in 2018. There he had gone on a bit of a rampage, beating John Isner, Alexander Zverev, Dominic Thiem and Novak Djokovic in successive matches to lift the trophy, but even that had come on the back of a couple of brilliant performances.

He had lifted the Marseille Open trophy, and gone on to win his home tournament in Moscow that very year.

Unfortunately for Khachanov, his follow-up season in 2019 hasn’t been the best. Four first round exits and a couple of wins in Vienna is all he had managed indoors last year.

Here in Cologne, Khachanov is the third seed and had a first round bye and while he is playing an opponent ranked beyond the top 500, he would do well not to feel complacent.

Bergs Impresses in First Tour Event

Local lad Zizou Bergs was playing his first match in the main draw of a tour event and the first match at any level above the Futures this level when he took on Albert Ramos-Vinolas. Not surprisingly, he was 8/1 to win, and that’s exactly what he did, surprising his much higher-ranked opponent in straight sets.

Bergs later admitted he loved thriving on his emotions and playing for the fans, and feeding off the atmosphere in the stadium. And playing at home, in Antwerp, the Belgian looks to have done just that in the first round of the competition.

The other factor Bergs would know is in his favour is his ability to fight on, whatever the situation in the match. He had faced two set-points in the second set, and later saw Ramos-Vinolas also serving for the set at 5-4.

That grittiness was on display for Bergs as he broke his opponent in that game and then again at 6-5 to clinch the match.

Khachanov is a higher-pedigreed opponent than Ramos-Vinolas but he has been warned.

Khachanov v Bergs Prediction and Tip

Khachanov is 1/12 to win this while the games handicap for his win is at -5.5. We could see a fight from Bergs but will that be enough to win him at least a set?

Tip: Over 8.5 games in the first set: 4/9 (bet365)
