Sabalenka Gains Hard-Fought Revenge over Gauff

Sabalenka had come into this match knowing the might of the precocious talent Gauff, and when she capitulated in the first set the way she did, it looked like she was on the verge of suffering her second defeat at the American’s hands since the return from pandemic.

The two had played in the second round of the Lexington Open, where Sabalenka had been ousted by Gauff in three sets. This time around, after getting broken twice in the first set, it looked like an earlier exit was on the cards.

Except it wasn’t. Sabalenka fought back to focus on her serve, holding on to it throughout the second set and while it took her time to make an impression on the Gauff serve, she did it at the most crucial juncture in the set. Serving to stay in the set at 5-6, Gauff was broken off the first break-point she offered in the set to begin what looked like a turnaround.

Except Gauff wasn’t done yet. She raced off to a 3-0 lead with two breaks of serve and the writing looked to be on the wall.

Sabalenka broke back once but another break of serve for Gauff brought her a chance to serve for the match on two separate occasions at 5-2 and 5-4. The Belarusian had other ideas as she went on a rampage from there on, winning back both the breaks and then winning the set in a tie-breaker 7-2.

Sorribes Tormo Crushes Kontaveit’s Hopes

The Spaniard had gone into her second round match against Anett Kontaveit as a rank outsider – bookmakers offering a whopping near 3/1 for her win. That was partly due to the difference between their ranking but more vitally given Kontaveit’s form all year.

That Sorribes Tormo won was a surprise in itself but doing that by dropping only five games would have come as a huge shock to most. Interestingly, we had seen this coming in a way, predicting Sorribes Tormo’s confidence being a reason to back her on the games handicap.

In a match lasting only an hour and 24 minutes, Sorribes Tormo was off to a flier when she broke Kontaveit to go 5-0 up. It was only in the sixth game of that set the Estonian won her first game before the Spaniard wrapped it up 6-1.

Kontaveit fought back with an early break of serve but that wasn’t enough to keep her in the game as Sorribes Tormo broke back two games later and then again at 4-4 before serving out the match.

It will be interesting to see how she goes up against a player whose form has been a bit iffy but is coming off one of the toughest wins of the season.

Sabalenka v Sorribes Tormo Prediction and Tip

Sabalenka starts off at 1/3 but one must give Sorribes Tormo some credit for the manner in which she has won two matches in straight sets. We could be looking at another toughie for Sabalenka, and the games market sounds like a top one.

Tip: Over 19.5 games in the match: 4/5
