Brady Shrugs Off Tie-Breaker Loss

Veronika Kudermetova wasn’t expected to give Brady too much of a fight given the American’s form but an early break of serve for the Russian indicated we were in a contest. And when Brady broke back to level things off in the first set, and then take a 4-0 lead in the tie-breaker, things looked to be going to the script.

The Russian, however, wasn’t done as she won the next five points in a row to take a 5-4 lead, before clinching the set on her first set-point in what seemed to be a shock in the making.

Brady had other ideas. Having come into the match as a 1/2 favourite to win it, she broke Kudermetova twice in the second set including once when the Russian was serving to stay in the set to level the match. And with the confidence fully restored, two more breaks of serve followed in the third set which enabled her clinch the win, 6-1 in the final set.

The US Open semifinalist, as a result, now makes it to her fourth last-four appearance of the season, having also entered one final – at Lexington – which she had gone on to win. With wins over Dayana Yastremska and Daria Kasatkina under her belt already in the tournament, a victory here looks a likely result unless her Spanish opponent can conjure up the magic from the previous round.

Sabalenka Completes a Total Turnaround

Here we were preparing to preview Brady’s semifinal against Sara Sorribes Tormo at one stage, such had been the Spaniard’s dominance in their quarterfinal encounter. With five successive breaks of serve for Tormo, she led 6-0, 4-0 and a semifinal berth looked a near foregone conclusion.

Sabalenka finally got on the board by holding her serve in the 11th game of the encounter, and almost as if to prove that was all she needed to build on, she broke her opponent with aplomb to pull one back. One became two and very soon it was a matter of Sabalenka getting on to the same kind of a roll her opponent had been on.

In the end, the Belarusian won 12 games in a row to win the match, coming back from 6-0, 4-0 deficit to win 6-0, 4-6, 0-6 and seal her place in the semufinal of the  competition.

She now takes on one of the best players of the second phase of the season and she can expect no respite for her.

Sabalenka v Brady Prediction and Tip

Sabalenka’s turnaround in the quarterfinal should fill her up with immense confidence but the feeling is Brady’s brillinace should see her through.

Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 5/6
