Gael Monfils v Pablo Carreno-Busta Head to Head

This will be the fourth meeting between the pair with the Frenchman leading the tally 3-1. Their first-ever meeting was back in 2014 when they met on the clay courts of Monte Carlo. This was the only time that Spaniard has won against Monfils.

After that, they met three more times over the course of the next two years with Monfils winning all three. This will be the first time they will be meeting in the last four years.

Monfils Still Looking for a Win Since Resumption

After an extremely impressive 2019 and the first half of the 2020 season, the 34 year old Frenchman has lost his form recently. He has played three matches post the season resumed after the pandemic break and has lost all of them.

His latest being at his home Grand Slam where he crashed out in the first round itself to Alexander Bublik in a hard-fought five-set match. This was after two straight-set losses in Rome and Hamburg.

Monfils will be glad to move on to the fast indoor courts and would be hoping that a change of surfaces would also mean a change in his fortunes.

He has a very impressive 146-64 win-loss record on the surface. And last season he reached the semi-finals here at Vienna as well as at Sofia. His best result on this surface last season was at Rotterdam where he beat Daniil Medvedev and Stan Wawrinka on the way to winning the title.

The Frenchman broke back into the top 10 on the back of last season’s performances and had a really impressive start to this one as well.

He won back to back titles, first at Montpellier and then defended his crown at Rotterdam. He crashed out in the semi-finals at Dubai after that where he at one point held match points against Novak Djokovic. The 34-year-old would be hoping to recapture some of that form and finish the season strongly.

Shock Loss for Carreno Busta at Antwerp

After a tremendous month where the Spaniard reached the semi-finals at the US Open and the last eight at the French Open, his first-round loss at Antwerp was a shock to many.

The 29-year-old lost to Ugo Humbert in three sets in a match where the Spaniard was widely tipped to win. But despite that, it has been a solid season for Carreno Busta which has seen him achieve his highest ranking in the last two years.

The Spaniard isn’t exactly a late bloomer but his best results have come in the last 3-4 years and eight years after he turned professional. Since 2017 he has reached two-quarter finals and two semi-finals at Grand Slams.

And has an identical record at Masters 1000 as well with two semis and two last eight appearances. He has also won four titles during this time.

Now the Spaniard would be hoping that the trend of going deep into a tournament after an early-round loss continues. After losing early in Cincinnati, he went on to make it to the last four at the US Open. Again he reached the last eight of the Roland Garros after crashing out in the first round at Rome.

Gael Monfils v Pablo Carreno-Busta Prediction and Tip

Just like the prior four meetings between the two players, this will also be decided in straight sets. The fast surface will give Monfils an advantage and he should finally end his losing run.

Tip: Monfils to win in straight sets: 4/5 (bet365)
