Daniil Medvedev v Alex De Minaur Head to Head

This will be the third meeting between World No. 6 Medvedev and World No. 29 De Minaur. The former won both the previous encounters on the hard courts of Sydney (where they met in the final) and Winston Salem in 2018.

Medvedev Yet To Reach a Final This Season

Following an outstanding 2019, where he won four titles, including two Masters 1000 events in Cincinnati and Shanghai, finished runner-up at the U.S. Open and played in a staggering nine finals, which included a phase where he reached six in a row, Daniil Medvedev was expected to rule in 2020, but he did anything but that.

The Russian started the season well, winning four of his five singles matches at the ATP Cup and then reached the fourth round of the Australian Open, matching his best-ever showing in the Melbourne slam.

It was followed by a first-round exit in Rotterdam, two quarterfinals in Marseille and Cincinnati and a run to the semifinals at the U.S. Open, where he was ousted by eventual champion Dominic Thiem. So overall, it has been a decent year, but very quiet compared to what he did last year.

Can he end the year on a high? Yet to reach a final this year, Medvedev will definitely want to finish the season strongly and would be one of the players to watch in Vienna. He enters the tournament with a 16-9 record in 2020 and will be aiming to add to his even career titles in Austria.

De Minaur Getting Better and Better

Facing Medvedev in the first round will be 21-year-old Aussie star, Alex De Minaur, who will be chasing his fourth ATP Tour title on Sunday, October 25, when he meets Ugo Humbert in the final of the European Open in Antwerp.

Runner-up at the NextGen ATP Finals last year, De Minaur claimed three singles titles in 2019, winning in Sydney, Atlanta and Zhuhai.

This season, he produced his best result at a Grand Slam, reaching his first major quarterfinal at Flushing Meadows, before falling to Thiem.

He struggled to keep that momentum going on the mini-clay season, making first-round exits from the Italian and French Opens. But the speedy Aussie is back in form on his preferred hard court, as he beat Richard Gasquet, Feliciano Lopez, Marcos Giron and Grigor Dimitrov (semifinal) in Antwerp to set-up a final against Humbert.

De Minaur, who is 10-7 overall this year, could well be 11-7 by the time he faces Medvedev in Vienna.

Medvedev v De Minaur Prediction and Tip

Form favours De Minaur, while experience favours Medvedev. It will be a hard-fought contest with Medvedev edging out the Aussie.

Tip: Medvedev to win in three sets: 3/1 (bet365)
