Ruud Looking To Prove Himself Outside Clay Courts

Seen as one of the most promising young players on the Tour, Norway’s Casper Ruud has shown constant improvement in his game and the successes of 2020 are a testament to it.

He began the year by winning his maiden ATP Tour title, defeating Pedro Sousa in the final to become the first player from Norway to win an ATP title. Following the success, he also surpassed his father, Christian’s best-ever ranking of 39. That win on clay was soon followed by a run to the final of the Chile Open on the same surface, but he fell in the last hurdle to Brazil’s Thiago Seyboth Wild.

Following the shutdown due to the pandemic, Ruud reached the third round of the U.S. Open, where he was beaten by Italy’s Matteo Barrettinni, but the Norwegian quickly got his revenge over the Italian on clay, beating Berrettinni in the quarterfinal of the Italian Open, thus becoming the first Norwegian to reach the semis of the Masters 1000 event. He was, however, beaten by eventual champion Novak Djokovic.

That run in Italy was followed by another semifinal appearance, this time at the German Open, but yet again he failed to reach the final after falling to Andrey Rublev. The latter went on to win the title.

At the French Open, Ruud won his first two rounds but was outclassed by Dominic Thiem in the Round of 32.

So overall, a solid clay court season saw Ruud rise to a career high ranking of 25 in September. But can he replicate that form on other surfaces is a big question?

Ruud, who is 22-11 this year, last played in Sardinia, where he was beaten in his first round (the Round of 16).

Sinner: A Star in the Making

Facing Ruud will be the 2019 NextGen ATP Finals winner Jannik Sinner. The Italian has been impressive in his young career so far and was sensational at the French Open earlier this month, as he beat seeded players in No. 11 David Goffin and No. 6 Alexander Zverev on his way to a maiden Grand Slam quarterfinal appearance. He was ousted by the unstoppable Rafael Nadal in straight sets.

Sinner comes to Vienna with a 13-10 record this year, having reached the semifinals in Cologne, where his march to the final was halted by Alexander Zverev on Saturday.

Earlier this year, Sinner also reached the quarterfinals in Rotterdam and most recently made it to the fourth round of the Italian Open.

The 19-year-old Italian, who reached a career-best ranking of 46, thanks to his French Open exploits, has a 10-7 career record on indoor hard surfaces, a stat that Ruud will be wary of.

Ruud v Sinner Prediction and Tip

Ruud is the higher-ranked player, but he is yet to deliver on hard courts, while his opponent has shown he can deliver on both surfaces. So Sinner will have the edge going into this one. Expect him to win in straight sets.

Tip: Sinner to win in straight sets: 10/11 (bet365)
