Tiafoe Climbing up the Ladder

Tiafoe had fallen down the rankings chart, having plumetted from his career-best of 29th to 84th at one stage, and even a month into the resumption of tennis, he was outside the top 80. Over the last two months, however, he has begun to show some sparkle, and a reason to believe he belongs in the top 30 as he once briefly did.

At the US Open, Tiafoe managed to make it to the fourth round, which included wins over Andreas Seppi, John Millman and Marton Fucsovics before he lost to Daniil Medvedev. A couple of early exits later, Tiafoe then participated in the Parma Challenger – on clay – which he went on to win, before going out in the second round at the European Open.

Here at Astana, Tiafoe has managed to win back to back matches in straight sets, easing past Corentin Moutet and Miomir Kecmanovic to reach the last eight. Kecmanovic, the Kitzbuhel Open winner, fought tooth and nail in the first set, coming back from a break down to level the set at 4-4 but Tiafoe then broke him in the 11th game and served it out for the set.

The second set was even smoother sailing as Tiafoe broke his opponent twice including once while he was serving to stay in the match at 3-5.

Gerasimov Avenges Pune Loss

Down a set in his second round match against Jiri Vesely, the memories of the Pune Open final from earlier this year would have begun to come back to haunt Gerasimov. Having delivered a solid performance all tournament in Maharashtra earlier this year, Gerasimov had crashed to Vesely in the final in three sets and the early loss of the set would have been a setback.

This time, however, Gerasimov seemed more battle-hardened. He broke Vesely in the fourth game of the second set and shut the door firmly in his opponent’s face when he repeated that dose in the ninth game of the third.

The Belarusian then served it out in the next game to finish off a hard-fought but deeply satisfying three-set win.

Gerasimov is coming off a second round appearance at the Cologne Open as a qualifier where he pushed Felix Auger-Aliassime into a third set tie-breaker and that experience looks to have helped him. Can he now upset the more fancied Tiafoe to make it to the semifinal?

Tiafoe v Gerasimov Prediction and Tip

Tiafoe holds the edge over Gerasimov with his form and ranking although there’s not much to choose between the two.

Tip: Tiafoe to win: 8/11 (bet365)
