Hubert Hurkacz v Radu Albot Head to Head

This will be their second meeting with the two having played at the Challenger level in 2017. That encounter, which came in Shenzhen, was the final of the tournament and Albot had won that in three tight sets.

Hurkacz, a Mixed Bag This Season

In the seven tournaments played by Hurkacz this year, he has won two matches in a row in two tournaments. In the rest, he has either crashed out in the first or the second round, making a frustrating run for him since August.

After all, the Pole had started off the season earlier this January in fine fashion, winning all three of his matches sat the ATP Cup, and then a further three at the Auckland Open before his six-match winning streak was brought to an end by Benoit Paire in the semifinal.

Since then, however, the form has gotten slightly patchy for Hurkacz, with a third round at the Rome Masters and a quarterfinal appearance at the Cologne Open being his only two sparkles in an otherwise gloomy set of results.

This year, he has played eight matches indoors and has won and lost four apiece, including a second round appearance last week in Vienna where the Pole lost to the eventual finalist Lorenzo Sonego. To be fair to Hurkacz he gave a good account of himself in that defeat, pushing the runner-up to two tie-breakers but can he now shrug the poor set of results off and win this one?

Albot Fighting Hard to Thwart the Capitulation

Had it not been for the pandemic and the subsequent change in the formula to calculate the ATP rankings, Albot would have fallen even further from his current ranking of 85th in the world. His best this season was at the beginning when he started off ranked 46th in the world but there has been a capitulation of sorts since.

Albot, in the entire season, has won just four main draw matches, having played in 15 tournaments. That’s a whopping record for someone who was ranked 39th in the world not so long ago.

On hard court surfaces he has lost eight matches without winning a single and while his best showing has come indoors, it’s tough to see how he could manage to get past an opponent ranked so much higher than him.

Even in the qualifiers here, he won and lost one, but as luck would have it, Albot made it to the main draw as a lucky loser? Is that a sign of a changing luck from what has been on display the rest of the year?

Hurkacz v Albot Prediction and Tip

Hurkacz should have no trouble getting past Albot and doing that in straight sets. Mentally, one believes, Albot would already be thinking of the next season and this might be a good chance to tweak his game and try out something new.

Tip: Hurkaz to win in straight sets: 4/6 (bet365)
