Marco Cecchinato v Norbert Gombos Head to Head

This will be the second meeting between the two players.

Marco Cecchinato won their only previous meeting, although it was six years ago in 2014. That win came in a qualifier in the Vegeta Croatia Open, with Cecchinato taking the match in a third set tie-breaker. Additionally, that match was on a clay court.

Cecchinato Hoping To Thrive On Unfavored Surface

Cecchinato may be a stalwart on the clay court, but his performances on hard and indoor hard courts have left a lot to be desired. His best finish in those types of courts is a second-round berth in Auckland. All his other hard and indoor hard court tournaments have yielded first-round eliminations.

This is a huge contrast to his achievements on clay, which recently saw him reach his fourth career final in the Sardinia Open and push his ranking from below the top 100 to 77th currently.

His most recent main draw match on the indoor hard courts of Cologne perfectly illustrates this. He’d come in flying high from his exploits in Sardinia, but German Jan-Lennard Struff humbled and defeated him in a straight sets defeat that he only managed to collect four games in total.

If he’s hoping to make amends, he’ll want to adapt to the faster courts, at least for this tournament. Luckily, for him, he’s coming up against an opponent in horrid form who may just offer him the practice he desires.

Gombos An Unlikely Favorite

The bookies have the Slovak as the favorite at 8 /15, largely due to Cecchinato’s struggles on clay. That, however, doesn’t take Gombos’ bad form into account.

He may boast a quarterfinal berth at Montpellier, but he’s only won 5 of the main draw matches that he’s played in all year. Additionally, he’s only played seven main draw matches post-hiatus and lost more than half of them.

His struggles seem to be on all different types of surfaces, unlike the Italian who thrives on one and falters on the other.

But he did show some good performances in qualifying, as he defeated 67th ranked Pablo Cuevas in straight sets and then Cologne Open Quarterfinalist Radu Albot, which may give him a boost of confidence coming into this.

Cecchinato v Gombos Prediction And Tip

For two out of form players, anything seems possible. It might be a quick defeat for either one of them, but I expect their clashing styles to force a third set in this one.

Tip: Match to have three sets: 6/4 (bet365)
