Marin Cilic v Ugo Humbert Head to Head

Cilic Benefits from Moutet Withdrawal

Corentin Moutet became the latest player to have tested positive for the coronvirus and had to be withdrawn from the tournament, allowing Cilic an entry into the third round.

This followed Cilic’s second round shock victory over Felix Auger-Aliassime, in which he was the second favourite by some distance against a player who had made it to the final and semifinal of the two tournaments played in Cologne recently.

Cilic looked sharp in the opening set of that first round match, as he didn’t allow his Canadian opponent to hold serve even once, bagelling him in the process. And while Auger-Aliassime fought back with a break of serve of serve twice in the second set, Cilic was off the mark again in the third set.

He got the better of Auger-Aliassime in the sixth game, and held on to the next two service games to finish off the encounter in three sets.

Having entered this tournament with a 1-3 win-loss record, a third round appearance, albeit thanks to a bye in the second, could help rebuild that confidence Cilic might have felt slipping away.

Humbert Humbles Tsitsipas

Not that it was the easiest win, not by some distance, but Humbert’s edging of Stefanos Tsitsipas was his seventh in a row indoors. The Frenchman, who had lifted the title at the Antwerp Open two weeks ago, needed three tie-breakers to get past the Greek second seed to make it to the third round.

In what has been a breakthrough year for Humbert, having won two titles already – the first two of his career – he started off this tournament with a three-set win over Casper Ruud. Needing three sets to get past Ruud, who was a distant 11/5 to win that encounter might not have augured too well for Humbert but the fight he exhibited against Tsitsipas would be a huge boost.

The second round match turned out to be a cagey affair with both players getting themselves just a couple of breaks of serve across the entire match. Which is when it came down to which player held his nerve during the big moments and perhaps hindered by injury, Tsitsipas struggled to make the big moments.

In the first tie-breaker, he fell 4-1 behind before Humbert wrapped it up, then showed immense grit in coming back from 5-1 down to clinch it 8-6 but the Frenchman did not repeat the same mistake in the third. He got a mini-break at 2-1, and then again while being 5-2 before winning it 7-3.

Cilic v Humbert Prediction and Tip

While Cilic has shown signs of old form, Humbert has gotten the better of two of the brightest players on the circuit right now. Sitting just two ranks behind his career-best of 32nd, Humbert looks to have the weapons to get past Cilic and starts off a 3/5 favourite to win this. The break between his second and third round match should help him recover as well.

Tip: Humbert to win: 3/5 (bet365)
