Elise Mertens v Alizé Cornet Head to Head

This will be the third meeting between the two players.

They each have one win against each other. Elise Mertens’ win came in 2018 in the third round of the Australian Open. Alizé Cornet’s victory, on the other hand, is the most recent one, having come in the 2019 Fed Cup.

Mertens Looking To Match 2020 End-Of-Year Form

Mertens had a good end to 2020 which will surely act as a confidence booster as she kick-starts this new season.

She reached two finals (Prague and Linz), made it to the semi-finals of the Western & Southern Open, and made it to the quarter-finals of the US Open, only losing to eventual finalist Victoria Azarenka.

She also won a doubles trophy with her doubles partner Aryna Sabalenka, who, coincidentally, ended up defeating her in her last match of the year in the Linz Open final.

That dent, however, was only a scratch to her good end-of-year form that is expected to show up come this tournament’s first round.

Cornet Hoping To Roar Once More

Like many players, former World No. 11 Alizé Cornet had a shorter than usual season. Her last tour match came on October 1st in the second round of the French Open in which she lost to Shuai Zhang in straight sets.

She had, however, began the season with promise, reaching the quarter-finals of the Auckland Open.

Since then, her mixed form and injuries haunted her, leaving her to settle for second-round berths in six out of the nine WTA tournaments that she played in 2020.

Now in the latter stages of her career and with fewer chances to regain her once-great form, she’ll be hoping to roar once more in 2021 and replicate the form that gifted her six WTA titles.

Up against Mertens, however, that seems like a daunting task for the 30-year-old.

Mertens v Cornet Prediction and Tip

Though early season predictions are often deceptive, this seems like a safe straightforward call. Mertens should be able to manipulate Cornet’s hard-court struggles and dominate the match from early on. Therefore, back Mertens to win, and she may even do so within the fewest sets possible.

Tip: Mertens to win in straight sets: 1/1 (bet365)
