David Goffin v Pierre-Hugues Herbert Head to Head
The 30-year-old Goffin has a perfect 5-0 record against the 29-year-old Herbert which includes two meetings in 2020.
While the Belgian needed five sets to dispatch the Frenchman in the Round of 64 of the Australian Open, he needed just two to win the quarterfinals at Montpellier.
Goffin On a Five-Match Losing Streak
World No. 16 David Goffin had a good start to 2020, as he scored his second win over No. 1 Rafael Nadal at the ATP Cup, reached the semifinals in Montpellier and broke back into the top 10 in early February for the first time in two years. But as the year went on, the three-time Grand Slam quarterfinalist struggled with form.
Post-lockdown, Goffin did reach the fourth round of the U.S. Open for the fourth consecutive year, but ended the year with five losses on the trot. His last win came against Filip Krajinovic in the third round at Flushing Meadows.
Since then he lost to Denis Shapovalov in the Round of 16 and exited from the Italian Open, French Open, European Open and Paris Masters, without even winning a set.
A four-time champion on the ATP Tour, Goffin (12-11 in 2020) will look to get into the groove quickly in Antalya and will be hoping to break the five-match losing streak against Herbert on Thursday.
Closing Matches an Issue for Herbert
Facing Goffin in the first round in Antalya will be World No. 83 Pierre-Hugues Herbert, who is yet to beat the former in singles.
The Frenchman, who reached the quarterfinals in Doha and Montpellier last year, has shown time and again that nerves can get the better of him in close contests.
Herbert squandered three match points against Felix Auger Aliassime in the second round in Marseille and three against Dan Evans in Dubai (both last year). He also forced a fifth set against Goffin in the second round at the Australian Open and against Alexander Zverev in the Round of 64 at the U.S. Open, but failed to close out either of those contests.
Herbert, who along with Nicolas Mahut has completed the career Grand Slam in doubles, finished 2020 with a 10-10 record in singles.
Goffin v Herbert Prediction and Tip
Goffin has the psychological edge and he will look to continue his dominance over Herbert. Expect the Frenchman to take a set, but the Belgian should take the decider.
Tip: Goffin to win in three sets: 3/1 (bet365)
