Sorribes Tormo Sees off French Open Semi-Finalist

Sorribes Tormo was given a tough looking opening draw against Nadia Podoroska of Argentina, the WTA World Young Player of the Year for 2020 after her performance at the French Open where she got to the semi-finals back in October.

In the end though she dealt with the challenge of the Argentine with comparative ease.

She broke the Podoroska serve early, only to hand the break straight back next game. The eighth game though proved to be decisive, with four deuces until the Spaniard finally forced a break point which she converted. She then served out of the set.

The second set was more uneven, with both women struggling to hold the serve. However, in the end, it was the Argentine who was unable to serve to stay in the match, and the contest came to an end after an hour and 43 minutes.

Pera Knocks Out Number 16 Seed

Pera has already had a good start to 2021 by knocking out the number 16 seed, Donna Vecic of Croatia in the first round.

The first set saw both women drop their serve once, resulting in a tie-break. That turned into something of a marathon, with both earning set points only to squander them. Eventually with the score 11 – 10 in her favour, Pera found the first serve she needed and was able to finally close out the set.

When she broke Vecic early in the second set, she had victory in her sights, but the Croat had other ideas and broke back twice to level the match.

And when Vecic broke the Pera serve early in the third set, it look like she would prevail. However, it was the seed who cracked under the pressure and dropped her serve twice more, allowing Pera to secure victory in a little over three hours.

Sorribes Tormo v Pera Prediction and Tip

Although there is very little to choose between the two in terms of world rankings. Pera had to dig very deep to beat Vekic, whilst Sorribes Tormo had a much easier match against Podoroska. She will be the fresher of the pair and that should give her the edge.

Tip: Sorribes Tormo to win in straight sets: 7/10 (bet365)
