De Minaur Aiming For Strong Run Before Home Slam

Young Aussie Alex de Minaur, aged only 21, has exhibited phenomenal promise on the tour in the last three seasons, already winning three ATP titles. With Australian tennis largely focused on the next star, De Minaur may well be the one in the making.

Extremely athletic, the fourth seed here has the ability to grind and execute impressively from the baseline, and it was this characteristic that saw him make the final eight at the US Open in 2020. With the long Down Under portion of the tour beginning in the very near term, De Minaur will be looking for a good run here, heading into his home slam with confidence.

The Aussie has looked in excellent touch this week, dropping only seven games in his first two rounds and knows that he has the form, confidence and ability to make a title run this week. With the likes of Goffin, Berrettini, Basilashvili and others ahead, De Minaur will know that the challenges get stiffer, but believe he has what it takes to prevail.

Basilashvili Hopes ’21 Reverses The Dip

Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili had a promising run in 2018-2019 winning ATP 500 level titles and reaching a career high ATP ranking of number 16. With victories against higher ranked and top ten players, Basilashvili looked set for more success on the tour.

However, 2020 saw a dip in performance and results with early round losses in the first quarter of the year, at Melbourne, Rotterdam and Dubai heading into the pandemic hiatus. Once the tour started after the Covid-19 break, Basilashvili looked woefully out of form with a string of first round losses on the US hard courts, European clay and the indoor season dropping to world number 40 in the rankings.

This week here at the Antalya Open, the Georgian will be happy to have made it to the last eight, although against relatively lower ranked opponents. Though he dropped a set against little known Andrea Arnaboldi, he did better to prevail in straight sets in the next round.

Basilashvili will be looking to keep the momentum going and will know he has to up the level here on against the likes of De Minaur and others.

De Minaur v Basilashvili Prediction and Tip

This promises to be a exciting contest between two players with excellent court coverage and strong groundstrokes. While Basilasvhili is the more experienced, he has had a poor run last season, unlike De Minaur whose career has been on the rise and will be hoping to further it more.

Expect the younger De Minaur to prevail in two competitive sets.

Tip: De Minaur to win in straight sets: 1/3 (bet365)
