Elina Svitolina vs Jelena Ostapenko Head to Head

This is the fourth time the two ladies are meeting on the WTA Tour. Ostapenko holds a 2-1 lead over Svitolina, defeating her back to back in the 2018 Miami Open and 2019 WTA Doha.

Svitolina Off to a Good Start in Melbourne

Following two weeks of quarantine like all other players, Elina Svitolina finally took the court for her first official game in the Australian Open series against Andrea Petkovic.

The 26-year-old was clinical in her performance against the German, as she needed just an hour and 12 minutes to reach the next round. She won the match 6-1, 6-4, with 6 aces and a first-service win rate of 71 per cent. Svitolina also saved 8 out of 10 breakpoints during the game as she kept a cool head and breezed past her opponent.

The current World No. 5 enjoyed a bye in the opening round and will now face the winner of the clash between Elise Mertens and Caroline Garcia.

Last year’s French Open quarterfinalist, Svitolina spent some time preparing for the land down under by playing in the WTA Abu Dhabi in early January. She went as far as the 4th round in that Premier Level tournament, losing ultimately to Veronika Kudermetova.

Ostapenko Looking to Build Momentum

The 23-year-old Ostapenko dispatched Danka Kovinic 6-4, 7-5, in a little over 90 minutes. The match saw Ostapenko commit 8 double faults but managed to walk away with the win, owing to her slightly superior experience on the tour.

Just before that win, she moved past the Italian veteran Sara Errani with 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 in her opener of the Gippsland Trophy.

It was one of the better performances by the 2017 French Open winner, who is playing in her first tournament since the WTA Ostrava last year.

Ostapenko is one of the many players on the circuit who have been battling a seemingly-never ending crisis of form. 2019 saw her plummet drastically in the rankings as she fell out of the top 40.

2020 was a mediocre year too, where her best result was reaching the third round in the Paris Slam.

Svitolina vs Ostapenko Prediction and Tip

Svitolina will start this game as the heavy favourite to win. She is in a comparatively better form and has played more tennis in the recent weeks than her Latvian counterpart. Expect her to win this in under 22.5 games.

Tip: Svitolina to win: 2/5 (bet365)
