Marketa Vondrousova v Nadia Podoroska Head to Head

While these two haven’t faced off in the main draw of any WTA competitions, they were involved in an encounter in the qualifiers of the 2017 French Open. Vondrousova had gone on to crush the Argentinian in that match, winning 6-1, 6-0 but what’s interesting to note is both players then went on to exhibit excellent results at the same competition – Vondrousova was the runnerup at the 2019 edition while Podoroska made it to the semifinal last year.

Vondrousova Wins Three-Hour Thriller

In a match lasting nearly three hours, 2019 French Open runnerup Vondrousova needed to dig really deep to come through against veteran Russian Vera Zvonareva. The Czech won 7-6 (4), 6-7 (4), 6-4 to set up this quarterfinal meeting.

As the scoreline indicates, there wasn’t much to choose between the two players all through their third round encounter, the pair matching each other break for break. In the first set, both had their chances to clinch it without taking it to the tie-breaker after going a break up but lost their serve in the very next game.

The second set saw Vondrousova take a 3-1 lead but again, Zvonareva levelled things off with back to back games with the set going into another tie-breaker. This time around, it was the Russian who dished out a 7-4 result on her opponent.

And then the final set was filled with breaks, with the odd hold interspersed in it.

Vondrousova drew first blood and Zvonareva levelled next game, and this was followed by another quick exchange of serves. A hold later, Zvonareva took the initiative with a break -the fifth of the set – but her opponent made it 4-4 soon after and with the Russian serving to stay in the match at 4-5, the 21st-ranked Czech broke one final time to complete a gruelling win.

Podoroska Stuns Petra

After starting out as a favourite in the first two rounds of the tournament and living up to those expectations, Podoroska played Petra Kvitova in her third round match, going in as a rank outside with odds of 5/2 to win the encounter.

A set down and those odds had considerably widened as Kvitova looked set to make her way through to another last-eight stage.

Podoroska, however, wasn’t done yet. An exchange of breaks early in the second set was followed by three successive breaks for the Argentine to wrap up the equaliser. Soon after she went 3-0 up in the third set only for Kvitova to bounce right back and level the score, taking the set to a tie-breaker.

Again, the fighting qualities of Podoroska came to the fore when she came back from 2-5 down under pressure to win four points in a row and get herself a match-point. Kvitova saved two match-points but off the third, Podoroska completed a famous back-to-the-wall victory.

Vondrousova v Podoroska Prediction and Tip

Interestingly, Vondrousova is a favourite here, with Podoroska starting out at 11/10 to win it. Expect another fighting match but we think the Argentinian world number 47 could pouch this.

Tip: Podorosk to win: 11/10 (bet365)
