Jennifer Brady v Marta Kostyuk Head to Head

Brady and Kostyuk will be facing off for the first time ever in a competitive encounter.

Brady Comes Back Strongly after Shock Abu Dhabi Loss

After making it as far as the semifinal at the 2020 US Open, a lot is expected out of the American world number 24 Brady. Which is why she fell away in the first round of the Abu Dhabi Open in January, losing to a player who was 7/2 odds to win the encounter, it came out as a big shock.

More so when Brady won the first set there 6-0 only to lose the next two.

Coming into her opening round encounter here in Melbourne, she was still a favourite but that previous result coupled with the pedigree of her opponent Svetlana Kuznetsova might have made a few consider it to be a straightforward victory.

As it turned out, Brady ran away to 6-3, 6-0 win in exactly one hour against the former world number two to rekindle hopes this could well be her season.

Other than that US Open performance last season where she lost to the eventual champion Naomi Osaka in the semifinal, Brady also clinched her maiden WTA title in 2020. That came in the Lexington Open.

Can she push on deep into this competition?

Kostyuk Continues to Impress

She is all of 18 years of age but Kostyuk has already captured the imagination of tennis fans. Last season Kostyuk was more active on the ITF circuit but a third round appearance at the US Open got everyone interested.

There she had defeated Daria Kasatkina and Anastasija Sevastova before pushing Naomi Osaka to the third set in that third round match.

Earlier this year, Kostyuk who made it to three ITF finals in 2020, seemed to have continued from where she had left off. A semifinal appearance at the Abu Dhabi Open helped her climb to a career-best ranking of 78th in the world – remember she was 320th on the charts in April 2019 – and a 6-0, 6-3 drubbing of Gabriela Dabrowski in the first round here in Melbourne should give her immense confidence.

Brady is a tough opponent as can be seen from how things have gone in recent times but Kostyuk’s fearless approach could be of help.

Brady v Kostyuk Prediction and Tip

Brady is 8/13 to win this despite a difference of 54 places between the two players, while Kostyuk starts off at 6/5. Could be a hard-fought battle which sees three sets.

Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 4/5 (bet365)
