Petra Martic v Olga Danilovic Head to Head

These two players have never met before this.

Martic Determined To Bounce Back

Consistency has been a key feature for Petra Martic’s Grand Slam career. She has not won one yet, but remains one of few top players to avoid the opening round curse for a long time now. It is three years since the Croatian last tasted defeat in the first round of Major.

While the 30-year-old is not a genuine candidate to win the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup in a fortnight’s time, it is a tribute to Martic that she is being spoken of as a possible fourth round opponent for Ashleigh Barty.

These projections, almost invariably never quite work out in the grand scheme of things. But Martic has made the fourth round of the Australian Open previously, and on her last Grand Slam hard court tournament, she advanced to the same stage at the US Open.

Martic’s 2021 campaign started in Australia, where she fend off the challenge of Vera Lapko at the Yara Valley Classic in her first match. From a set and a break down, the Croat roared to pick up her first win of the season. But in her very next assignment, she couldn’t quite recover from going down as she lost in straight sets to USA’s Shelby Rogers.

Danilovic Set For Grand Slam Main Draw Debut

In what must have felt like eternity, Olga Danilovic broker her duck at last and successfully qualified in a main draw of a Grand Slam for the first time. It was symbolic of Danilovic’s struggles over the years that she needed a third set to beat India’s Ankita Raina in the final round of qualifying to punch her ticket to Melbourne.

Since she burst onto the scene as a 17-year-old, Danilovic won her first WTA title at the Moscow River Cup in 2018, beating Anastasia Potapova in a teenagers’ final. She became the first player born in 2000s to win a WTA title.

The Serbian lefty then peaked just inside the top 100, but she caught the inconsistency bug and in no time she dropped out of it (currently sitting at world no.183). But her ranking and game is on the mend.

After navigating her way into the main draw, Danilovic flew straight to Melbourne to play at the Yara Valley Classic where she was beaten in straight sets by Belgium’s Greet Minnen.

Martic v Danilovic Prediction and Tip

This is a dangerous opening match for Petra Martic against an opponent who seems to be on an upward trend. Danilovic is making her Grand Slam debut and has nothing to lose. I expect the Serb to be as competitive as she was in the qualifiers.

Tip: Danilovic to win a set: 4/5 (bet365)
