Dimitrov Makes Strong Start

Grigor Dimitrov made a winning start to his Australian Open campaign with an impressive straight-sets beating over former finalist Marin Cilic. The Bulgarian won 6-4 6-2 7-6, foiling Cilic in his attempt to serve for the third set before winning it in the tiebreak.

The 29-year-old rolled back the years and served  reminder of just how good he can be against an opponent determined to return to his best days. Dimitrov fired 19 aces, and won 83% of first serve points. He broke serve four times, kept Cilic on the move through with excellent shot-making.

The use of top spin and that killer slice caused Cilic plenty of problems, particularly on the backhand where the Croat has the tendency of hitting flat and without any conviction. The 2018 finalist hit 41 unforced errors and only garnered one break point in the whole match.

The Australian Open is officially Dimtrov’s best Slam. He is now 25-10, and he has advanced past the first round in 10 out of 11 appearances. He has also reached two quarterfinals and one semifinal down the years. So far this season, he played in one tournament before the Australian Open, reaching the last eight of the Murray River Open last week.

Bolt Continues To Shine On Home Soil

Alex Bolt was the first local winner on Day 1, as he produced a convincing four-set victory over Norbert Gombos of Slovakia.

Bolt’s 6-2 6-2 4-6 6-3 win against an opponent ranked over 50 spots above him in the rankings further strengthened his impressive record at his home Grand Slam where he has advanced beyond the first round in each of the previous two editions.

The Australian wildcard reached the third round in 2019, and last year he came close to shock Dominic Thiem when leading by 2-sets to 1, before losing in a five-set marathon. Bolt came into this contest against Gombos, having played very little tennis on tour in recent months, and only earned a wildcard entrant courtesy of the good work he did at the Launceston Challenger and during the UTR Pro series.

However, the world no.166 looked sharp from the get go. He broke Gombos’ serve twice in the opening set to take a commanding 5-0 lead. He wrapped up the set with another break to take it 6-2. The 89th-ranked Slovakian responded in the next two sets, but the Australian was always favorite to keep up his good record at home.

Dimitrov v Bolt Prediction and Tip

Bolt thrives while playing on home soil. But he is coming against an opponent who is also very much at home on these parts. Dimitrov’s game is firing on all cylinders and it would be a seismic shock if he falls to Australian wildcard.

Tip: Dimitrov to win in straight sets: 10/11 (bet365)
