Garbine Muguruza v Zarina Diyas Head to Head

In their only previous meeting before this, Muguruza had needed three sets to get past Diyas. This match came at the 2020 Shenzhen Open.

Muguruza Continues Opponent Mauling

If her form at the tune-up tournament in Melbourne before this was anything to go by, Muguruza’s twin wins at the Australian Open this time shouldn’t have come as too much of a surprise.

Muguruza, who made the final of the Yarra Valley Classic Open last week by dropping just 10 games spread across four matches – she went down fighting to Ash Barty in the final – proved too strong for Ludmilla Samsonova in the second round at the Australian Open. She needed an hour and five minutes to register a 6-3, 6-1 win over her Russian opponent.

In both the sets, Muguruza grabbed a couple of breaks apiece, but more vitally was in so much control of her serve she didn’t face a single break-point in the entire match.

Earlier in the first round, the previous year’s Australia Open had crushed Margarita Gasparyan 6-4, 6-0, again wasting very little time on court in getting past her opponent.

Diyas Finally Wins Two in a Row

It was at the 2020 Australia Open that Diyas had last won two rounds at any of the tennis tournaments she played in. Beating Amanda Anisimova and Anna Blinkova, Diyas went out to Kiki Bertens in the third round there.

Since then, however, her form dipped away and a rather lackadaisical post-pandemic-break session saw her lose in the first round of five of the six tournaments she participated in. The only round she won came at the Strasbourg Open on clay.

Following on from there, Diyas’ start this season wasn’t any better as she lost in the first round of the Abu Dhabi Open to Ekaterina Alexandrova. Surprisingly, she was one of the very few players featuring at this Australian Open who didn’t play in any of the tuneup tournaments either, making it even tougher for her.

Which is why going into both her first two round matches here, against Tamara Zidansek and Bernarda Pera, she was the second favourite according to the bookmakers but still came through to march into the third round – much like the 2020 competition in Melbourne.

Can she go one better?

Muguruza v Diyas Prediction and Tip

Diyas will hope she can use some of her rare momentum to remain in the encounter but the relentlessness of Muguruza’s groundstrokes make her a very strong favourite here.

Tip: Muguruza to win in straight sets: 1/2 (bet365)
