Felix Auger-Aliassime v Aslan Karatsev Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between the 20-year-old Canadian, ranked 19th in the world, and the 27-year-old Russian, ranked 114.

Auger-Aliassime Powers Past Shapovalov

Continuing his stunning run at the Australian Open, Felix Auger-Aliassime overpowered compatriot Denis Shapovalov in the third round of the Australian Open on Friday.

The 20-year-old right-hander struck 31 winners and broke the lefty five times to win the match 7-5, 7-5, 6-3 in two hours and 28 minutes.

This was the first time that the NextGen star beat his good friend at a Grand Slam, having lost to Shapovalov in the first rounds of the U.S. Open in 2018 and 2019.

The Canadian, who reached his seventh ATP Final last week at the Murray River Open, is yet to drop a set in the first major of the year.

Beginning the campaign with a 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 win over lucky loser Cedric Stebe of Germany, Auger-Aliassime looked even better in the second round as he ousted Aussie James Duckworth 6-4, 6-1, 6-2, before producing another dominating performance against Shapovalov on Friday, to level their head-to-head matchup at 2-2.

Auger-Aliassime is coming off two very productive seasons, having reached six finals in 2019 and 2020 combined. He would, however, be disappointed that he is still searching for his first career title.

He began the 2021 season with four wins on the trot to reach a seventh final, at the Australian Open warm-up event last week, but yet again faltered in the last hurdle, losing to Dan Evans in the title clash.

What would be hurting Auger-Aliassime more is the fact that he is yet to win a set in a final.

The Canadian, who reached the fourth round of a major for the first time at the U.S. Open last year, will be making his maiden Round of 16 appearance in Melbourne on Sunday, with a strong chance of advancing to his first ever Grand Slam quarterfinal.

Karatsev’s Shock Run Continues

Qualifier Aslan Karatsev of Russia caused a major upset on Friday as he demolished eighth-seed Diego Schwartzman of Argentina in straight sets to storm into the fourth round of the Australian Open.

Dominating the contest against the World No. 9, Karatsev hit 50 winners against his opponent’s five to win the one-hour-and-52-minute match 6-3, 6-3, 6-3.

In what was his first-ever top 10 victory, Karatsev saved 10 of 11 break points and converted five of six.

The Russian, ranked 114 in the world, has been in scintillating form in Melbourne, having not lost a set in the first three rounds. He began the campaign with a 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 win over Italy’s Gianluca Mager in the first round and followed that with a 6-0, 6-1, 6-0 rout of World No. 79 Egor Gerasimov of Belarus.

The Russian, who has nine titles at the Challenger and Futures level, is yet to lose a match this year, having won all three of his qualifying rounds in January.

Auger-Aliassime v Karatsev Prediction and Tip

This should be a fascinating contest between the rising star of World tennis and an unknown Russia who has made heads turn with his dominant performances. However, one can expect the Canadian to end the Russian’s surprise run in the fourth round.

Tip: Felix Auger-Aliassime to win: 4/7 (bet365)
