Bouzkova Eases Past Zhu Lin

Czech Republic’s Marie Bouzkova eased into the third round of the Phillip Island Trophy by beating China’s Zhu Lin in the second round on Monday.

The 22-year-old converted 4 of 8 break points while saving 4 of 5 to take the contest 6-4, 6-2.

On Saturday, Bouzkova had lost the first set 3-6 to Montenegro’s Danka Kovinic, but was ahead 5-0 in the second when Kovinic withdrew from the first-round contest.

Bouzkova, who lost to Elina Svitolina in the first round of the Australian Open, had begun the season at the Yarra River Classic, where she beat Samantha Stosur and Aliona Bolsova in the first two rounds before crashing out to eventual champion Ashleigh Barty in a three-set Round-of-16 contest.

A 12-time winner on the ITF Circuit, Bouzkova reached her first-ever WTA final at the Monterrey Open last year before going down to Svitolina in a closely fought three-setter. She hadn’t dropped a set in the tournament until the final.

The Czech right-hander finished last season with a 10-9 record that also included wins over Petra Kvitova in the Western & Southern Open and Johanna Konta at the Top Seed Open and the Monterrey Open.

Bouzkova, who achieved a career-high ranking of 46 last year, had broken into the top 100 in 2019, thanks to her run to the semifinals in the Rogers Cup.

The 20-year-old Aussie right-hander, who is making her WTA main draw debut, had lost her qualifying round 0-6, 6-4, 4-6 to India’s Ankita Raina before getting an entry into the main draw as a lucky loser.

After her shock win over Sasnovich, Bouzkova will not take Da Silva Fick lightly, but one can still expect a straightforward win for the Czech.
