Kudermetova Hopes to Build on Solid Start
Having started the season with a stunning run to make it to the final of the Abu Dhabi Open, Kudermetova would have liked to do a lot better in the two Melbourne tournaments that followed.
In the first, the Grampians Trophy, which was the warmup competition played in the week before the Australian Open, Kudermetova fell to Ann Li in the second round. And then in the Australian Open, while she did make it to the third round, she would have loved to go deeper given her solid form.
That said, one must quickly add here a couple of things; one it was the Russian’s best performance at a Grand Slam, equalling the third round appearance in the 2019 French Open. And two, her defeat came to Simona Halep, one of the pre-tournament favourites.
Kudermetova, however, would have loved to do better than the 6-1, 6-3 defeat to the Romanian and will now look to push on from there in the rest of the season.

Rogers with a Strong 2021 So Far
While Rogers did not quite make it as far as Kudermetova did in Abu Dhabi, her performances in both the tournaments she has played so far have been stellar.
First, at the Yarra Valley Classic, she won three rounds, which included a win against Petra Martic, before she fell to the world number one Ash Barty in the quarterfinals. She then made it as far as the fourth round of the Australian Open, which again included a victory over Anett Kontaveit, a player who was 4/6 to win the encounter, but for the second week in running lost to Barty in round four.
Rogers, who had never made it this far at the Australian Open and just twice earlier to the fourth round of a Grand Slam, will be a strong competitor going into this encounter.
Especially given how well she finished the previous season with her maiden US Open quarterfinal appearance and a semifinal at the Lexington Open.

The kind of form both players are in, it leaves us with a potentially mouth-watering clash with Rogers starting out a narrow favourite. Expecting a hard-fought three-setter here.
