Sonego Had His First Round Struggles

.Sonego reached the second round in Melbourne, which equalled his previous best at a Grand Slam event. He had a comfortable straight sets win over the American Reilly Opelka in the first round, before losing to Spanish veteran Feliciano Lopez, despite taking a two set lead.

In the first round here in Montpellier, he met local man Hugo Gaston, and, although he beat the world 162 in the end, the win was not without its difficulties.

The first set was comfortable enough, with one break of serve enough for Sonego to put his nose in front.

However, although he broke Gaston again in the first game of the second set, he could not hold on to the advantage this time. Three more service breaks followed, which meant that the set went to a tie-break, which Gaston duly clinched to level the proceedings.

Sonego raced into a  four game lead in the third set, and, although Gaston was able to claw a break back, Sonego broke him once more, and finally put the match to bed.

Korda, Beaten Finalist in Delray Beach

Although he won the 2018 Australian Open title as a junior, Korda elected not to travel to Melbourne this year. Instead, he stayed in America where he reached his first ATP final, losing to Hubert Hurkasz of Poland in Delray Beach.

Switching his focus to Europe , he then won the Challenger tournament in Quimper, France, although he could not repeat that success in Biella, where he suffered a first round defeat.

However, he bounced back in Montpellier with a straight sets defeat of local favourite of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the first round.

The first set was dominated by serve – there was only one break point created, which Korda converted to establish the advantage.

The second was more open, with break chances created on both sides of the net. Korda was forced to save several break points, but then broke the Frenchman, and followed that up with another break, enabling him to serve out the match from there.

Sonego v Korda Prediction and Tip

Although Sonego is the higher ranked layer and the seed, Korda is the man in better form and he will start favourite to win this match.

Tip: Korda to win in three sets: 3/1 (bet365)
