Martic Overturns Set Deficit
After having made bit of a mixed start to the season, Martic was staring at the wrong end of the barrel when she fell a set behind to Ludmila Samsonova in her first round match here in Adelaide.
In match that swung like a pendulum and lasted nearly two and a half hours, Martic then ran away with the second set, bagelling her opponent and a quick turnaround looked to be on the cards. And things looked to be moving to script when Martic broke Samsonova twice in the third set to set up a serve to take a 5-1 lead.
Except it did not turn out to be like that. Martic was broken the very next game and then again while serving for the match at 5-4. Fortunately for her, she was able to hold her nerve, break back and then hold her serve again to clinch the match in three sets.
Earlier last week, the Croat had made it to the quarterfinal in the Phillip Island Trophy before she went down to Daria Kasatkina in straight sets.

Gauff Coming Through Some Tough Matches
It’s not been the kind of start that Gauff would have hoped for in the season, having made second round exits at three successive tournaments including the very latest Australian Open.
She stayed behind in Australia after that loss in the season-opening major, opted not to play in the Phillip Island Trophy which was held concurrently with the second week of the Australian Open and then went through the qualifiers here in Adelaide.
After an easy opening win in the qualifying rounds, Gauff needed to overcome a first set loss in the second match against Kaja Juvan to make it to the main draw. And then in the first round, again, she needed a three-setter to get past fellow qualifier Jasmine Paolini.
What would worry Gauff is the manner in which she fell apart in the second set, after she led by a set and 5-2 in the second, only to lose it in a tie-breaker. Thankfully for her, she came back strongly in the final set to clinch the encounter 6-4, 6-7, 6-2 to enter round two.
Will she now manage to stall her run of second round exits or would it be four in a row for the American teenager?
Martic v Gauff Prediction and Tip
This one might be a straightforward result. Gauff has the talent but still vying for the experience needed at this level while Martic, despite that experience is struggling a tad for form. We could look at a three-setter in this one.
