Yulia Putintseva v Storm Sanders Head to Head
There has been only one previous meeting between these two players and that came way back in 2012 on the ITF circuit. Putintseva had won that one in straight sets.

Putintseva Comes Through in Controversial Match
It wasn’t a match for the tennis purists between Putintseva and Laura Siegemund but in the end it was the world number 28 from Kazakhstan who prevailed in straight sets to come through.
Putintseva was accused of gamesmanship when she opted to get herself a fresh pair of shoelaces with her opponent serving at 40-40 in one of the games, and she went on to prevail 6-4, 6-4 in the feisty opening round encounter.
The Kazakh, who was routed 6-4, 6-0 in the third round of the Australian Open by Elina Svitolina before this tournament in Adelaide, came through in an hour and 49 minutes. In the first set, it was Siegemund who got the first break only to be broken by Putintseva in the very next game before she broke for a second time to win the set.
This was followed by Putintseva winning the early break in the second set, dropping serve the next game and only to break her opponent while serving at 4-5.
A slightly easier second round opponent awaits Putintseva, who would be desperate to make it deeper into the competition, as she bids to break into the top 20 of the rankings.
Sanders Finally Wins Main Draw Match
Australia’s Sanders has never seen the top 200 on the WTA rankings charts in her career and before coming into this tournament, had last won a main draw match in March 2020. It came at the Hua Hin Open, following which she struggled to do much of note because of the pandemic, opting to feature on the UTR Pro Tennis circuit.
This year, Sanders lost in the very first qualifying round of the Australian Open and then had to play in the qualifiers here in Adelaide, beating Bernarda Pera and Caty McNally to make it to the main draw.
The biggest surprise came in the opening round here, where she didn’t just beat Ajla Tomljanovic but pummelled her opponent, dropping a mere three game to win her opener.
Putintseva will be a different cup of tea as an opponent.
Putintseva v Sanders Prediction and Tip
Putintseva is 1/4 to clinch this and 8/11 to win it in straight sets. We don’t expect this to go on for too long and will go with a slightly riskier option here.
Tip: Putintseva to win AND Under 19.5 games in the match: 7/5 (bet365)
