Hubert Hurkacz v Alejandro Davidovich Fokina Head to Head
The world number 30 Hurkacz and the 56th-ranked Fokina have played each other once before this and that outing came in the 2020 US Open. Fokina won that second round match in four sets.
Hurkacz Starts with a Bang But…
It was quite a start to the season from Hurkacz who added a second career title to his name by winning the Delray Beach Open. After getting a bye in the first round of that competition, Hurkacz won four matches in a row in straight sets to add to his Winston-Salem Open title he had won in 2019.
A Great Ocean Road Open quarterfinal appearance would have boosted his confidence, where again he won both his first two rounds in straight sets, which meant he went into the season’s first Grand Slam with oodles of form and confidence.
Unfortunately for the Polish player, he blew a two sets to one lead against Mikael Ymer and lost his opening round match at the Australian Open in five sets.
Hurkacz will now resume his quest to improve his current ranking of 30th in the world to beyond his career-best of 28th and after a first round bye, he faces an opponent who could prove to be a tad tricky.
Davidovich Fokina Kick-Starts Season with Montpellier
The Spaniard opted not to travel to Australia for the year’s first Grand Slam, instead featured in a couple of Challenger competitions in Quimper and Biella, but won just one match and lost two there.
In his opening round here, Fokina was up against Bernabe Zapata Miralles, a fellow Spaniard ranked 146th in the world, and he was taken to three sets by him. In the end, Fokina won 7-6 (3), 5-7, 6-2 in a match lasting two hours and 33 minutes.
The difference between the two players was the first serve points won by Fokina (70%) as compared to his opponent’s 59%. That, in the end, meant Fokina edged ahead with one extra break of serve and that helped him clinch the encounter in the decider.
Hurkacz v Davidovich Fokina Prediction and Tip
On paper, this looks like a no-brainer, with Hurkacz’s good form despite that opening defeat at the Australian Open making him a heavy favourite for this one. Backing the Pole to win this one.
Tip: Hurkacz to win: 4/6 (bet365)
