Cilic Ends Losing Streak

2014 U.S. Open champion Marin Cilic began his quest for a 19th career title with a straight sets win over Japan’s Taro Daniel in the Singapore Tennis Open on Wednesday.

The 7-5, 6-4 victory was the first for the former World No. 3 in 2021, after he made first round exits in his previous two tournaments, falling to Jeremy Chardy and Grigor Dimitrov at the Murray River Open and the Australian Open, respectively.

An 18-time champion on the tour, Cilic struck 12 aces, won 82% of his first serve points, saved three of four break points and converted three of five to beat the 120th-ranked Daniel in an hour and 41 minutes.

The win snapped a four-match losing streak for the 32-year-old, who had not won since beating Corentin Moutet in the Round of 32 at the Paris Masters in November 2020.

A runner-up at Wimbledon 2017 and the Australian Open in 2018, Cilic has struggled with form over the last couple of years, reaching just one semifinal (at the Kremlin Cup) in 2019 and failing to go past the Round of 16 in any of the tournaments in 2020.

Kwon Dispatches Uchiyama With Ease

Facing Cilic on Friday will be world No. 81 Kwon Soon-woo, who marched into the last eight with a straight sets win over Japan’s Yasutaka Uchiyama on Thursday.

The Korean won 82% of his first serve points, saved all three of the break points that he faced, and capitalized on two of the seven break point opportunities that he created, to win the contest 6-3, 6-4.

The 23-year-old, who won a Challenger event in Biella, Italy, last Sunday, had begun his campaign on Wednesday with a come-from-behind first round win against American qualifier Thai-Son Kwiatkowski. The two-hour-and-10-minute contest ended with the South Korean winning 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

The hard-fought win on Wednesday was followed by a straight-forward victory against Uchiyama, with the match ending in an hour and 22 minutes.

A winner of three Challenger and five Futures titles, Kwon had a good 2020 season, which saw him feature in four quarterfinals as he finished 8-7. The second-round win on Friday improved him to 3-3 this year.

Cilic v Soon-woo Prediction and Tip

While Cilic is expected to win, Kwon won’t make it easy and could well take a set of the Croatian, stretching him to the hilt.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
