Sorana Cirstea v Nina Stojanovic Head to Head

Cirstea won the pair’s only meeting before this in Nurnberg in 2019. The Romanian came from behind to win in three sets en route to the semifinals.

Decent Start to 2021 for Romania’s Cirstea

When it came to early upsets, the 2021 Australian Open produced plenty of them in the opening week. One of those was registered by Sorana Cirstea who knocked out one of the tournament favorites in Petra Kvitova.

Kvitova was one of the biggest casualties in the first week, allowing Cirstea to a first top 10 win at a Grand Slam in nine years. But it was a waste of an upset as the Romanian world no.67 failed to back up that win in her next round against Marketa Vondrousova.

But still, there were plenty of positives to dwell on for Cirstea who had endured a turbulent run of form in recent seasons. Cirstea fared decently at the Grampians Trophy and the Australian Open, and this can be largely attributed to her second half of the 2020 season.

The 30-year-old made the third round of the US Open following tennis’ resumption and won the $100,000 ITF title in Dubai – her biggest title in nearly ten years. She rose from a year-end ranking of world no.86 to 71. And after a quarterfinal showing in the Melbourne tune-up event, which saw her beat Belinda Bencic, she has broken the inside the world’s top 70.

Stojanovic Looking to Build On Australian Open Main Draw Win

Nina Stojanovic had a Grand Slam breakthrough in both singles and double competition at the recently-concluded Australian Open.

Stojanovic, ranked no.95 in the world, won her first match at Grand Slam level on her fourth attempt. She beat Romania’s Irina Camelia Begu, against all the odds, and even more impressively in straight sets. But she fell soon after in the second round against Serena Williams.

Instead of resting on her laurels, the 24-year-old Serb joined forces with Croatia’s Darija Jurak in doubles, and the pair reached the semifinals in Melbourne where they lost to the experienced team of Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova.

Stojanovic will be keen to build on a very productive stay in Melbourne. Before the Australian Open, a win over Mayar Sheriff of Egypt at the Yara Valley Classic brought a winning feel in main draw matches. Not since Guangzhou in 2019, had she posted another win at tour level.

Can she keep up that form against Cirstea?

Cirstea v Stojanovic Prediction and Tip

Cirstea is the overwhelming favorite and rightly. She is the more experienced and more accomplished of the two at this level. This should be a fairly routine win.

Tip: Under 20.5 games in the match: 5/6 (bet365)
