Frances Tiafoe v Facundo Bagnis Head to Head

Their only previous outing came on the Challenger circuit way back in 2015. Played on clay Tiafoe had won that opening round encounter at the Tallahassee Challenger in three, tour sets.

Tiafoe Hopes to Better Results after Showing Good Signs

Despite finishing the first leg of the tour on three wins and three defeats on the hard court surfaces of Delray Beach and Melbourne, the signs have been better for Tiafoe than was the case last season.

In 2020, Tiafoe had struggled to get going at a similar time of the season, and it was only towards the end of the year did the American show some spark. He ended the year with a title win at the Parma Challenger on clay, which was sandwiched by a fourth round appearance at the Australian Open and a semifinal in Nur-Sultan in his last tournament for the season.

A quarterfinal at the Delray Beach Open would have increased his confidence but Tiafoe then struggled to adapt to the conditions and fell in straight sets in a Melbourne tuneup tournament, going down in three to Corentin Moutet at the Murray River Open.

At the Australian Open, the American defeated Stefano Travaglia in the first round and for a while looked competitive against the world number one and eventual champion, Novak Djokovic in the second round. He even managed to take a set off the Serb before losing in four.

Clay hasn’t been Tiafoe’s forte but a win at the Parma Challenger last year suggests there’s a definite will to change that around.

Bagnis Makes Cordoba Semifinal

The big question is whether Bagnis’ run to the semifinal of the Cordoba Open having started out as a qualifier is a case of flash in the pan or something the 31-year-old can build on.

Having always struggled on hard court surfaces, it didn’t come as too much of a surprise when Bagnis lost in his first qualifying round at the Australian Open, and a second round defeat indoors at the Istanbul Challenger indicated a change in surfaces.

He was back playing on clay and after needing some adjustment time – he was 2-3 on clay as well leading up to the Cordoba Open – Bagnis seems to have gotten some of his form back. Starting out as a qualifier in that tournament, he won three matches to make it to the main draw and then overcame Nicolas Kicker, Federico Delbonis and Jozef Kovalik to make it to the semifinal.

And while Bagnis lost to Albert Ramos-Vinolas there, he will want to make most of his form.

Tiafoe v Bagnis Prediction and Tip

It’s Bagnis who starts off as a favourite with an offer of 4/6 for his win and given his momentum it makes sense to jump on this.

Tip: Bagnis to win: 4/6 (bet365)
