Andrey Rublev v Marcos Giron Head to Head

Rublev Looking to Move on Australian Open Loss

Sure that defeat came at the hands of the eventual finalist and a player whose 20-match winning streak was ended only by Novak Djokovic but Rublev would believe he could have done better in his Australian Open quarterfinal against Daniil Medvedev.

The Russian, coming into that match on an eight-match winning streak of his own, might not have been close to being a favourite but would have preferred to do a lot better than a 7-5, 6-3, 6-2 result.

Having already helped Russia win the ATP Cup earlier this season, Rublev had won five ATP titles in 2020, his best season by a long distance and one that propelled him into the top 10 of the ATP Rankings. He starts off this competition as the fourth seed and in with a chance of going the distance where he could face Medvedev again – this time in the final.

Before that there could be a small matter of taking on his American opponent in round one but judging by how ruthless he has been disposing off lower-ranked players, it looks highly likely he wouldn’t need too much time on court.

Qualifier Giron Coming off Three-Match Losing Streak

On the one side is a player who had won eight matches in a row before he lost one, and here’s Giron who qualified for this event following a three-match losing streak.

This was after having started off well in the Murray River Open where he reached the third round before losing to Dan Evans in straight sets. Alexander Zverev inflicted a crushing win against Giron in the opening round of the Australian Open, before a shock loss to Tallon Griekspoor meant he will now to need to restart finding his rhythm all over again.

And it wouldn’t help too much that he starts off his attempt to break his losing streak with a match against Rublev.

Giron did have a solid last season though, making it to the quarterfinal in Antwerp having started off as a qualifier and the third round at the Paris Masters also after having won two rounds in the qualifying. Can he push the Russian if not defeat him here?

Rublev v Giron Prediction and Tip

Rublev is an overwhelming favourite here starting out at 1/9 to win it and 4/11 to do so in straight sets. Looking at the under-games market here.

Tip: Under 19.5 games in the match: 8/11 (bet365)
