Arantxa Rus vs Greet Minnen Head to Head
The head-to-head tally is tied at 1-1 with the two ladies last meeting in Singapore in 2019. Rus won that game 7-6(8), 6-2.
Interestingly, they have also clashed on the doubles circuit as well – Rus partnered with Tamara Zidansek while Minnen was paired with Alison Van Uytvanck. The ladies met last year in the Palermo Open Doubles and it was the Rus-Zidansek team that prevailed in three sets.
Rus, Clocking her First Win in 2021
Before coming to Lyon, Rus had featured in three WTA events this year but lost in the first round in all of them. In Abu Dhabi, she fell to Xiyu Wang with 3-6, 6-3, 4-6 while in the Yarra Valley Classic, she had the misfortune of meeting Venus Williams in the opener.
Following that straight-set loss to Williams, Rus incurred a similar result in the Australian Open where she was defeated by Iga Swiatek in straight sets.
That said, Rus has managed to break the curse in Lyon with a 7-6(8), 6-4 win over Wang in the opening match. The stage couldn’t have been set better as the number 8 seed avenged her defeat in Abu Dhabi by beating the Chinese.
Strictly in terms of wins, the Dutchwoman had a better spell last season. She played in a couple of ITF $100,000 events in Europe and Egypt where she respectively was the runner-up and the semifinalist. The 30-year-old had a decent stint in the WTA Monterrey too where she lost in the semifinal to Elina Svitolina.
In the Italian Open and Western & Southern Open, Rus started as a qualifier and made it to the second round. However, on the doubles circuit, she had a lot more success as she won the doubles title with Zidansek in Palermo and the Linz Open.
Minnen, Hunting her First Singles Title
The 23-year-old Minnen is currently ranked outside the top 100 and is working hard to have a breakthrough spell on the tour. So far this season, the best she has managed is reaching the second round in the Yarra Valley Classic and Phillip Island Trophy. In the former, she fell to Nadia Podoroksa in straight sets while in the latter, she was beaten by Rebecca Peterson.
As for her performance in the Australian Open, she started as a qualifier and reached the main draw after moving past the likes of Veronica Cepede Royg and Varvara Lepchenko. However, in the first round, she was beaten by Petra Kvitova with 3-6, 4-6.
Minnen has spent most of the previous season alternating between the ITF and WTA events but the Belgian hasn’t had a lot of success in either. Among her better performances was her semifinal run in the ITF $80,000 in Texas where she fell to Ann Li.
In Lyon, she has started well with a 7-5, 7-5 win over Katarzyna Kawa.
Rus vs Minnen Prediction and Tip
Minnen has more momentum than her Dutch counterpart but she isn’t as experienced as her. Expect this to be a battle of the evens but Minnen, given her slightly better form on the tour, should prevail in the end.
Tip: Minnen to win 2-1: 3/1 (bet365)
