Fiona Ferro v Tereza Martincova Head to Head

The pair have never met before. This will be the first match between the 23-year-old French woman, and her Czech opponent, who is three years older.

Ferro Struggled Past Frech

The second seed was the heavy favourite to beat the world 161 Magdalena Frech in the first round, but, although she got the job done in the end, she made very heavy weather of it.

Frech began badly, dropping her serve in the opening game, and, although she broke back, and even nosed ahead, she dropped her own serve twice more to allow the Pole to take the first set.

Again, the Frenchwoman dropped her opening game of the second set, but, this time, she was able to break back and then broke once more to level the match.

When Ferro went a double break down at the start of the third set, it looked like an upset was on the cards.

However, to her credit, she did not buckle, and fought back to level.

She surrendered her serve once more, but broke back straight away and finally forced another break to clinch the win with her second match point.

Martincova, A Czech Qualifier

Martincova qualified for this event by winning two matches in the warm-up tournament, and then was fortunate enough to draw another qualifier in the first round in the form of the Italian Giulia Gatto-Monticone of Italy, the world 176.

The pair swapped service breaks early in the first set, but then Martincova asserted control, and broke twice more to close out the set.

However, the Czech began the second set badly, dropping her serve in the opening game, and then dropped her serve once more.  She recovered one of the breaks but immediately surrendered her serve once more, allowing the Italian to level.

The pair swapped service breaks at the start of the third set, but gradually Martincova got on top. She forced a break, saved two break points on her own serve, and then broke once more, from which point she could close out the match.

Ferro v Martincova Prediction & Tip

Ferro will know that she will have to play a whole lot better than she did against Frech if she is to go deep into this tournament. However, a mark of a good player is to win when not playing well and, having got that match out of her system,. should have too much for the Czech qualifier.

Tip: Ferro to win in straight sets: 3/5 (Sign up here with bet365 to get excellent odds!)
