Miomir Kecmanovic v Thiago Monteiro Head to Head

The pair have met once before, in the qualifying competition for the Australian Open in 2019. The Serb won that match in straight sets, dropping just three games, but that was on a hard court.

Kecmanovic Looking to Improve on Cordoba Showing

Regarded as one of the young rising stars of world tennis, Kecmanovic enjoyed a  career breakthrough last year when he won his first senior ATP title on the clay of Kitbuhel.

However, 2021 has not gone so well for him so far.

He was beaten in the first round in Antalya, and would have been hoping for better at the Australian Open than to lose to the experienced Frenchman Adrian Mannarino, in straight sets in the second round, well beaten in the end.

And last week in Cordoba, he suffered another first round defeat, this time to the eventual winner Juan Manuel Cerundulo, the world 181, who pulled off a major surprise by going on to win the event.

Given the benefit of a first-round bye here, he will have spent hours on the practice court, honing his clay court game again.

Monteiro Enjoying Career High Ranking

Now 26, Monteiro has reached his highest career world ranking, on the back of what has been a fine year to date. He reached the semi-final in Adelaide, before losing to the Italian, Stefano Tavaglia, and, like Kecmanovic, went on to reach the second round in Melbourne before he was defeated by Alexander Bublik.

Switching his attention to the South American clay court swing, he too was defeated by Cerundulo in Cordoba, but not before reaching the quarter-final first.

In the course of that run, he defeated the Spaniard Roberto Carballes-Baena, and, as fate would have it, the pair were drawn together again in the first round in Buenos Aires.

And the result was just the same – a comfortable win for the Brazilian.

Monteiro dominated the first set, breaking in the opening game and then midway through the set, which he completed in 42 minutes.

He then broke after a marathon fifth game of the second set, and although the Spaniard briefly entertained some hope when he broke straight back, Monteiro immediately seized the advantage again and never looked back from there.

Kecmanovic v Monteiro Prediction and Tip

This is likely to be a close match with little to choose between them. Kecmanovic won their only previous match easily, but that was on a completely different surface. Given their recent respective forms on clay, the Brazilian is the favourite to advance.

Tip: Monteiro to win: 1/2 (bet365)
