Paula Badosa vs Stefanie Voegele Head to Head

This is the first meeting between the two players on the WTA Tour.

Badosa Survives a Major Scare

Paula Badosa started her journey in Lyon against the Frenchwoman Harmony Tan. The match was nothing short of a nail-biting affair as it came down to the wire in the final set.

The Spaniard won the match by the skin of her teeth with 6-4, 0-6, 7-6(5) by winning the crucial points when they mattered the most.

The number 7 seed kickstarted her 2021 season in the WTA Abu Dhabi where she reached the third round after beating Anastasija Sevastova and Alize Cornet. She ultimately succumbed to Veronika Kudermetova there before heading to the land down under.

Badosa only participated in the Australian Open where she lost her opening match to the Russian qualifier Ludmila Samsonova in three sets.

The 23-year-old had a breakthrough spell last season where she moved up in the rankings. Her most notable run came in the French Open where she reached the fourth round after beating the likes of Sloane Stephens and Jelena Ostapenko. Before that tournament, Badosa was a semifinalist in WTA Istanbul.

Currently ranked World No. 73, Badosa will look to get some consistency and wins under her belt in Lyon. She is certainly in a better form than Voegele and on paper at least, she should win this game.

Voegele Looking for Some Positives in Lyon

Around the same time last year, Voegele was on the cusp of cracking the top 100. Now, she is ranked #122 in the singles ranking and the trend only appears to be going downwards.

In fact, her first-round win over Irina Bara was her first professional win on the circuit in 2021. It was a well-deserved victory for the Swiss, who fought relentlessly for three sets and almost three hours to win the game 7-6(3), 6-7(5), 6-3.

Before this, the 30-year-old Swiss was in Melbourne for the Grand Slam where she fell in the first qualifying round to Katharina Gerlach. As for her performance last season, it primarily consists of her early-round and qualifying round losses.

There are a few exceptions to this of course. The most prominent one came in the Linz Open where she reached the second round as a qualifier. Similarly in the Oracle Challenger Series, she reached the final after beating a bevy of American players. However, she had to settle for the runners-up trophy after losing to Madison Brengle.

Voegele has recorded only two top 10 wins in her career, with her last one coming in the 2019 Indian Wells Open against Stephens.

Badosa vs Voegele Prediction and Tip

Badosa is comparatively in a better form than her Swiss opponent although, she is likely to face a lot of resistance. This game has all the makings of being a long affair with plenty of games to be played.

Tip: Over 19.5 games in the match: 5/6 (bet365)
