Thiem Hoping Dimitrov Loss Becomes a Distant Memory

Dominic Thiem came into 2021 with the monkey off his back as far as winning his first ever major, but with the added expectations of being one who is going to add to his title count and an actual equal with the likes of Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal.

It was a disappointing start for the Austrian who looked woefully out of touch in his ATP Cup opener against Matteo Berrettini and the rusty run seemed to continue into his opener against Mikhail Kukushkin in the first round of the Australian Open as well. However, he looked to be getting into himself with a convincing win against Dominik Koepfer and coming back from two sets down against home favorite Nick Kyrgios to win that match in a decider.

But, a combination of the quarantine, the expectations, and the Kyrgios match took its toll on the Austrian as he looked a shadow of himself in the fourth round encounter against Grigor Dimitrov. After letting go of 3-1 leads in both sets, he was down two sets to love, losing both sets 4-6,4-6 and any hopes of another recovery to win a five setter was doomed when he was unable to win more than a few points and lose the third set 0-6.

Unclear till today what the real issues were behind that dismal performance, but Thiem and the tennis fans of the world will be hoping that he has put them behind and we see the Thiem we all know and believe can be close to the very best in the world for good portions of this season.

Karatsev An Overnight Star After Aussie Open

Playing in his first ever Grand Slam at this year’s Australian Open, Russian  Aslan Karatsev had a magical run, making the semi-finals defeating the likes of Egor Gerasimov, Diego Schwartzman, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Grigor Dimitrov before falling at the hands of world number one and eventual champion Novak Djokovic.

Karatsev’s spectacular run saw him become an overnight star on the tour as his ranking went up almost 100 places from being a qualifier ranked in the top 150 in the world to world number 45 right now.

In his first round here at Doha, where he played the qualifiers of the Aussie Open in January, Karatsev defeated Qatari Mubarak Shana Zaqyid dropping four games in just above an hour and if Thiem is feeling anything close to how he was on that Sunday against Dimitrov, we maybe in for a close match next up.

Thiem v Karatsev Prediction and Tip

This could very well have been the quarter-finals of the Australian Open, but for Thiem’s surprise fourth round loss to Grigor Dimitrov. Karatsev has shown he is no pushover, but we are expecting that Thiem is over the poor showing and challenges from Melbourne and should be back to his clinical best.

Expect two well fought sets, with Thiem winning them both.

Tip: Thiem to win in straight sets: 4/5 (bet365)
