Elena Rybakina v Ons Jabeur Head to Head

Rybakina won their only previous meeting in Wuhan in 2019, beating Jabeur in a three-set Round-of-32 contest.

Rybakina Powers Past Zheng

Last year’s Dubai runner-up Elena Rybakina kicked off her 2021 campaign in style, as she handed China’s Zheng Saisai a 6-0, 6-4 defeat in an hour and 13 minutes.

The 14th seed Rybakina, who featured in five WTA finals last year, raced to a 6-0, 3-1 lead without much trouble before the Chinese brought out her A game to test the 6”0’ tall right-hander.

Rybakina, however, got her act together and closed out the contest to improve to 5-5 this year.

The World No. 23 has struggled to replicate her 2020 form this year. She reached the quarterfinals in the season-opener in Abu Dhabi, but won just once in the next three tournaments.

The 21-year-old, who won her maiden title in Bucharest in 2019 and added another in Hobart last year, reached five finals in 2020, including the one in Dubai, where she came very close to winning a third title before going down to top seed Simona Halep 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).

Her route to the final included wins over Sofia Kenin in the first round, second seed Karolina Pliskova in the quarterfinal and eighth seed Petra Martic in the semifinal.

Rybakina, who made a first-round exit from the Qatar Open last week, had a 28-11 record in 2020.

Jabeur Off To a Flying Start

Facing Rybakina in the next round will be Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur, who improved to 7-4 in 2021 with a straight sets win over Czech Republic’s Katerina Siniakova on Sunday.

The 31st-ranked Jabeur needed just 65 minutes to win the first round contest 6-2, 6-3.

Broken just once in the match by the World No. 68, Jabeur converted four of nine break points and won 57 percent of the total points to score her second consecutive win over Siniakova in what was their seventh meeting overall. The Czech had won the first five matches between the two.

The 2018 Moscow runner-up, Jabeur, who reached five quarterfinals, including her first at the Australian Open, in 2020, has had a mixed season so far.

Beginning in Abu Dhabi, she won her first two rounds, but failed to match up to Aryna Sabalenka’s quality in the Round of 16.

At the Grampians Trophy, she was ruthless against Anna Blinkova in the first round, allowing the Russian to win just two games in the match; however, she failed to carry that form into the next round, falling to Angelique Kerber in straight sets.

At the Australian Open, she made another promising start, beating Andrea Petkovic and Anna Schmiedlova in the first two rounds respectively, before being knocked out by Naomi Osaka.

Last week, she beat Blinkova again in the first round of the Qatar Open, before going down fighting to the second seed Karolina Pliskova.

Rybakina v Jabeur Prediction and Tip

Both players are known for the variety in their game. Expect this to be a very close contest, with the winner being decided in the third set.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
