Dominic Thiem v Roberto Bautista Agut Head to Head

This will be the fifth meeting between the players with Agut leading the head-to-head 3-1. Agut won all their three meetings in 2015, with Thiem winning in St.Petersburg in 2018.

Thiem Scratchy In Opener But Prevails

Dominic Thiem came into 2021 with the monkey off his back as far as winning his first ever major, but with the added expectations of being one who is going to add to his title count and an actual equal with the likes of Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal.

It was a disappointing start for the Austrian who looked woefully out of touch in his ATP Cup opener against Matteo Berrettini and the rusty run seemed to continue into his opener against Mikhail Kukushkin in the first round of the Australian Open as well. However, he looked to be getting into himself with a convincing win against Dominik Koepfer and coming back from two sets down against home favorite Nick Kyrgios to win that match in a decider, before the combination of the quarantine, the expectations, and the Kyrgios match took its toll on the Austrian as he looked a shadow of himself in the fourth round encounter against Grigor Dimitrov.

Coming to Doha as the top seed, but getting lost in all the media craze around the return of Roger Federer, Thiem did not get off the best of starts against Aussie Open surprise semi-finalist Aslan Karatsev, giving up a 5-2 lead in the tiebreak to lose five consecutive points and in turn the tiebreak itself. The Austrian looked to get into his groove thereafter, and the lack of experience showed for the Russian as Thiem closed out the next two sets 6-3,6-2 in quick time. Thiem will hope to be more clinical here on as the pressure intensifies with more challenging opponents.

Agut Looking To Improve On Slow Start To The Season

Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut has been among the more consistent players on the tour for the last couple seasons. Since the Covid-19 hiatus, he has however lost his consistency and has performed poorly closing out 2020 in both the US & French Opens with early losses failing to make the second week, in turn dropping out of the top ten of the rankings.

The 2021 season started well for him with a win at the ATP Cup against Alex de Minaur but has been followed by losses that week to Stefanos Tsitsipas and Matteo Berrettini. An opening round loss at the Australian Open to Radu Albot was the icing on the cake to end a disappointing trip Down Under.

Things looked up for him at Montpellier where he made the finals before losing to David Goffin, but it was another disappointing outing last week with a first round loss to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina at Rotterdam. The Spaniard has seemed in better nick this week with a hard fought opening round win against big serving American Reilly Opelka, but then a clinical win against the in-form Kazakh Alexander Bublik.

Thiem v Agut Prediction and Tip

This makes for a great contest and neither player has been in the best of touch this season as yet. It will come down to the better player on the big points and key moments and in recent times, Thiem has seemed to be more clutch.Expect a tight straight sets win for the Austrian.

Tip: Thiem to win in straight sets: 6/5 (bet365)
