Sara Sorribes Tormo v Eugenie Bouchard Head to Head
Their only previous meeting also came in Mexico. It was in the first round of the 2017 Monterrey Open which Tormo won in straight sets.
Been quite a journey, from facing each other in the first round to playing in the final here.
Sorribes Tormo in a Fightback Victory
Sorribes Tormo was nearly 2/1 going into her semifinal against Marie Bouzkova, but when she won the first set courtesy a break of serve in the first game, it looked like parity had been restored.
She broke early yet again in the second set but when Bouzkova broke right back, and then made it two in two, it looked like she had found her lost rhythm and the tide had turned. Bouzkova was soon serving for the set at 5-3, but Sorribes Tormo wasn’t done yet, breaking back and pushing the set into a tie-breaker.
The Spaniard then rattled off six points in a row before finishing things off 7-3 to clinch her first ever finals berth on the WTA circuit.
Earlier in the tournament, she had gone into every match as a favourite, beating Greet Minnen, Leon Kung and Astra Sharma to make it as far as the semifinal. She had also shown signs of form at the Abu Dhabi Open where she stunned Nadia Podoroska en route her quarterfinal appearance, but opening round exits at Gippsland Trophy and Australian Open looked to have set her back.
Can she win her maiden WTA title here?
Bouchard Aiming to Win a Rare WTA Title
A fighting Bouchard made it to the final, a first on hard court surfaces since 2016 with a 6-2, 7-6 (2) victory over Elisabetta Cocciaretto and with it her dream of breaking back into the top 100 continues to prosper.
Having fallen to 330th in the world following poor form and injury issues, Bouchard has shown great resolve over the past few months to keep pushing hard and getting to the latter stages of tournaments, and this is the second WTA final she would be featuring in since the resumption of tennis after the pandemic break.
And to do that, Bouchard has already overcome Caroline Dolehide, Kaja Juvan, Caty McNally and now Cocciaretto in the semifinal.
In a match which lasted an hour and 46 minutes, Bouchard eased through the first set with breaks of serve in the third and seventh games, and seemed to be cruising through to a win when she went 5-3 up in the second.
While she did get broken when serving for the match at 4-5, the tie-breaker that followed proved to be a piece of cake for the Canadian who won five points in a row to complete the victory.
Sorribes Tormo v Bouchard Prediction and Tip
This could be a tough-as-nails contest with both players having a lot to prove – Sorribes Tormo is yet to a win a WTA title while Bouchard is a comeback trail with much to do in a bid to break back into getting direct qualifications for the majors. We could see a keen tussle which goes very close.
Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 5/6 (bet365)
