Stefanos Tsitsipas v John Isner Head to Head

There have been four previous matches between Tsitsipas and Isner and the scoreline is tied at 2-2. However, Isner’s wins had come in 2017 and 2018 – at the Shanghai Masters and Wimbledon respectively – while Tsitsipas has won their more recent encounters at the China Open of 2019 and the Cincinnati Masters in 2020.

Tsitsipas Blasts Past Paire

It wasn’t supposed to be the most difficult of encounters for Tsitsipas given what has transpired with Benoit Paire in recent times but for the Greek number one to spend a mere 70 minutes to demolish his opponent speaks wonders about his own confidence.

Tsitsipas won 6-3, 6-1 in a match where he was barely tested by his French opponent, facing and saving two break-points with ease. In turn, he helped himself to seven break-points and broke his opponent four times including once very early in the opening set to show he meant business.

And while he missed a couple of set-points in the ninth game, he finally held on to his own serve to clinch the opener off his own serve.

The second set was one way traffic from the get-go as Tsitsipas upped the ante and his opponent just couldn’t cope. The Greek broke twice to race off to a 4-0 lead and then once more to close out the encounter.

Before this Tsitsipas had entered the tournament on a 10-3 win-loss record which included a semifinal at the Australian Open but a quarterfinal loss in Marseille.

Two-Time Semifinalist Isner Looking for Rhythm

Last year, Isner had featured in just 20 matches and won and lost 10 apiece. This year, he has already missed out on the entire Australian leg of the season, and nearly three months into the year, played in just three matches.

It started with a quarterfinal loss at the Delray Beach Open following an opening round bye and a tough second round win over Thiago Monteiro. Isner lost to fellow American Sebastian Korda there.

And then two months later, Isner looks to have begun well, registering a straight-set victory over Italy’s Salvatore Caruso in his opener. Isner spent an hour and 12 minutes in registering a 6-4, 6-3 win, with one break of serve in each of the two sets.

The first set went to serve till the 10th game when Isner broke Salvatore as he looked to serve to stay in the set. The second set was a lot easier for Isner who found his rhythm early, breaking his opponent in the sixth game to finish off the encounter.

His second round opponent will be a different kettle of fish.

Tsitsipas v Isner Prediction and Tip

While Isner’s serve will make it difficult for Tsitsipas, the Greek shouldn’t have too many issues against a player still finding his feet this season. A straight-set win looks likely.

Tip: Under 21.5 games in the match: 5/6 (bet365)
