Alexandrova Leads Russians Charge in St. Petersburg

Ten Russian women started in the singles draw, and remarkably seven will be contesting quarterfinal matches on Friday at the Sibur Arena in St. Petersburg. This is the highest number of players representing one country in WTA history at this stage of the competition.

One of them is the top seed Ekaterina Alexandrova, who only needed to play one match to book her spot in the last eight. The 26-year-old kicked off the night session on Wednesday with a hard fought straight sets win over Tereza Martincova of the Czech Republic.

The pair were tied on their head-to-head, but it was Alexandrova who regained the lead in the series with a 6-3 6-4 win in a 73-minute contest.

Russia’s top ranked player outpaced her opponent with flat, powerful ground strokes. She hit 19 winners against 17 unforced errors. Alexandrova twice came from a break down in the second set, and halted a run of four service breaks to hold for 5-4. With the scoreboard pressure beeping, Martincova dropped her serve in the tenth game to concede the match.

Alexandrova will play in her fourth quarterfinal in St. Petersburg.

Gasparyan Holds Off Siniakova

Margarita Gasparyan has always had difficulties making an impression on home soil. She has been a recipient of some tough draws in his three previous appearances. In fact, last year, she lost in the first round of qualifying to Vera Zvonareva.

But in getting a wildcard into the main draw at this year’s event, she has repaid the tournament organizers with some dazzling performances. The 26-year-old one-hander  avenged last week’s beatdown to Kristina Mladenovic in Lyon, by defeating the Frenchwoman in a thrilling three setter in the opening round.

In front of a small pocket of Russian supporters, Gasparyan found extra zip off her elegant backhand as she ripped winners down the line in her second round match against Katerina Siniakova.

The match itself produced two identical sets of momentum shifts and scoreline. After storming into an early lead, Gasparyan was pegged back by Siniakova’s unorthodox brand of tennis. But each time, the local favorite raised her own game to break the Czech again and serve out both sets 6-4.

This will be the 26-year-old’s first WTA quarterfinal in nearly two years and her first at 500-level since Moscow 2015.

Alexandrova v Gasparyan Prediction and Tip

Gasparyan has done fantastically well to reach this stage of the competition. But she is playing her compatriot who is the top ranked Russian in women’s tennis right now. Expect the gulf in rankings to be a key metric in deciding the winner.

Tip: Alexandrova to win in straight sets: 10/11 (bet365)
