Seventh seed Sara Sorribes Tormo notched her seventh win in a row on Friday, as she knocked out Slovakia’s Anna Karolina Schmiedlova in the quarterfinal in straight sets.

The winner of the Guadalajara title last week, Sorribes Tormo needed two hours and 12 minutes to battle past the Slovak 6-3, 7-5.

This was Sorribes Tormo’s second match of the tournament after she received a walkover from Slovenia’s Kaja Juvan in the Round of 16.

The World No. 57’s first-round match was also a long affair, as she needed two hours and 53 minutes to dispatch Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko 5-7, 6-2, 6-4.

Last week, the 24-year-old Spanish right-hander won her first career title by beating Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard in the Guadalajara Open final.

Starting with a win over Belgium’s Greet Minnen, Sorribes Tormo beat Switzerland’s Leonie Kung in the Round of 16, Australia’s Astra Sharma in the last eight and Czech Republic’s Marie Bouzkova in the semifinal before scoring a 6-2, 7-5 win over Bouchard in the final.

Against Schmiedlova on Friday, Sorribes Tormo won 84 of 155 points in the match, saved four of eight break points and converted seven of 17 break opportunities to improve to 11-3 this year.

The Spaniard, who achieved her career-high ranking this week, began the year with a run to the quarterfinals in Abu Dhabi.

Fernandez Topples Kuzmova

Facing Sorribes Tormo in the semifinal will be Canadian teen Leylah Fernandez, who defeated Slovakia’s Viktoria Kuzmova in the quarterfinals on Friday.

The 18-year-old Canadian needed an hour and 56 minutes to secure her third straight sets win in Monterrey, as she beat the 22-year-old Slovak 7-5, 6-3.

Last year’s Monterrey quarterfinalist, Fernandez had beaten America’s CoCo Vandeweghe 6-3, 6-2 in the first round and Slovakia’s Kristina Kucova 6-1, 6-4 in the Round of 16.

Friday’s win improved the Canadian to 6-4 in 2021. The Australian Open was the only tournament where she failed to win a match this year. She competed in three other tournaments before the start of Monterrey Open, winning her first match in each of them but failing to go past the next round.

The World No. 88 Fernandez had an impressive 2020 season, which included a run to her first career final in Acapulco, which she lost to Heather Watson in three.

Sorribes Tormo v Fernandez Prediction and Tip

Sorribes Tormo is enjoying a purple patch and conquering her will be a massive challenge even for someone like Fernandez, who has been impressive. Expect the Spaniard to reach a second consecutive final.

Tip: Sorribes Tormo to win: 4/5 (bet365)
