Inconsistency a Problem for Siegemund

World No. 59 Laura Siegemund is 3-6 in the main draws and 6-6 overall this season.

A two-time winner on the WTA tour, Siegemund reached her first major quarterfinal in Roland Garros last year, falling to Petra Kvitova in the last eight.

She also won her maiden doubles title at the U.S. Open last year, where she partnered with Russia’s Vera Zvonareva. It was her second major success following her mixed doubles title with Croatia’s Mate Pavic at the U.S. Open in 2016.

The 33-year-old German right-hander began the 2021 season with a first round defeat to Belgium’s Kirsten Flipkens at the Abu Dhabi Open. She picked her first two wins of the year at the Gippsland Trophy, reaching the Round of 16 before going down to Simona Halep.

The defeat to the top seed Romanian was followed by two more losses, as Siegemund crashed out of the first rounds of the Australian Open and the Adelaide International, losing to Serena Williams and Yulia Putintseva respectively.

She entered the main draw of the Qatar Open next, by winning all three of her qualifying rounds and then ousted Elena Rybakina in the Round of 32 before falling to Victoria Azarenka in the next round.

Her struggles continued in Dubai, as she went out to Russian wildcard Anastasia Potapova in the first round.

Siegemund, who has reached three singles finals in her career, won her first title in Bastad, Sweden in 2016. Her second title came in Stuttgart in 2017, one year after she finished runner-up in the same event.

McHale Looking For First Main Draw Win in 2021

Facing Siegemund in the first round will be America’s Christina McHale who is 1-5 overall this season, having won just one qualifying match in Adelaide.

The American, ranked 90th in the world, will be making her eighth main draw appearance at the Miami Open. She has never gone out in the first round, but has gone past the second round only once, in 2018, when she fell to Garbine Muguruza in the Round of 32.

The 28-year-old who reached a career-high ranking of 24 in 2012, didn’t qualify for the last edition of the Miami Open in 2019.

A two-time WTA finalist, McHale lost to Slovakia’s Dominika Cibulkova in the final of the Mexican Open in 2014. She captured her first title in Tokyo in 2016, beating Czech Republic’s Katerina Siniakova in the final.

This year, McHale has struggled with form, failing to win a single main draw match.

She went down to Estonia’s Annett Kontaveit at the Grampians Trophy, lost to Argentina’s Nadia Podoroska at the Australian Open and to Zarina Diyas in the first round of the Phillip Island Trophy before winning her first match of the season by beating Australia’s Ivana Popovic in the first qualifying round at the Adelaide International.

She, however, lost her second qualifying round to Australia’s Madison Inglis, but got into the main draw as a lucky loser only to go down to Latvia’s Anastasija Sevastova.

Laura Siegemund v Christina McHale Prediction and Tip

Both players have been inconsistent, but Siegemund has more victories this season and should be the favorite in this contest. The only thing that goes in McHale’s favour is the fact that she has far more experience in Miami and has never lost a first round match in her seven previous main draw appearances in the tournament..

Tip: Siegemund to win: 4/11 (bet365)
