Pedro Martinez v Tennys Sandgren Head to Head

The pair have  never played each other before.

Martinez in His First Match Since Melbourne

Like most Spanish players, Martinez was brought up on clay, and that is the surface on which he has won all ten of his titles on the junior tours, and reached nine other finals.

Not surprisingly then, prior to this year, his best result in a Grand Slam came in Paris last October, where he got to the third round before losing to the American Sebastian Korda.

It was, therefore, unexpected, when Martinez emulated that achievement in Melbourne last month.

In his first-round match he came from a set down to beat the Japanese player Yoshihito Nishikori in four sets.

Exactly the same thing happened in Martinez’s next match with the Finn Emile Ruusuvouri – Martinez dropped the first set but won the next three.

Martinez began better in his third round match with Dasun Lajovic by taking the first set – but this time it was his opponent’s turn to bounce back by winning the next three. He has not played since Melbourne.

Sandgren Has a Poor Record in Miami

Despite twice having been a quarter-finalist at the Australian Open, Sandgren has a poor record in other big tournaments, and a second-round appearance in Indian Wells remains his best performance in a Masters’ event. He has never got beyond the first round in Miami before.

He has played very little tennis in 2021 so far, and the only time that he won a match was in the Great Ocean Road warm-up event in Melbourne, before losing to Salvatore Caruso of Italy in the second round.

Unfortunately for Sandgren, there was no repeat of his heroics from previous years at the Australian Open, and he was beaten in straight sets in the opening round by local man Alex de Minaur.

He did not reappear on tour until Acapulco, but his stay in Mexico was a brief one, losing in the first round to the Canadian, Felix Augur-Aliassime.

Martinez v Sandgren Prediction and Tip

Although Sandgren is the higher ranked player and neither man has played recently, Martinez is tipped to produce a small upset based on comparative form earlier this year.

Tip: Martinez to win in three sets: 3/1 (bet365)
